The Opportunity
KIAC is looking for a strategic and visionary Executive Director (ED) passionate about KIAC’s mission to oversee and guide the activities and operations of the organization. The ED will ensure that employees and operations meet all regulatory and legal requirements, develop and foster organizational culture, and promote collaboration throughout the organization and with clients and community partners.
The ED will manage a team of three Directors, with ultimate responsibility for a team of ten staff, numerous volunteers, and an annual budget of over $1 million. The ED reports to and will collaborate with the Board of Directors to identify, create, implement, and evaluate strategic plans to attain the goals of the organization.
The responsibilities of the Executive Director include:
Organizational and Staff Leadership
- Responsible for effective administration of KIAC’S operations including developing, updating and ensuring compliance with employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for KIAC’s daily operations.
- Inspire, motivate, and build rapport to cultivate a cohesive staff, ensuring that there is strong communication, participation, coordination, and accountability across departments.
- Supervise KIAC Directors, supporting and guiding their leadership and operational integrity; model and provide effective leadership and collaboration with KIAC staff.
- Responsible for the hiring, evaluation, and retention of competent, qualified staff.
- Apply a focus on thoughtful and intentional organizational development with a commitment to professional growth for team members at all levels; demonstrate transparency, availability, and willingness to invest in staff development and organizational culture.
Financial Management and Development
- In collaboration with the Board Treasurer, maintain the fiscal integrity of KIAC including submission to the Board of a reasonable and accurate annual budget and monthly financial statements.
- Responsible for fiscal management that generally operates within the approved budget to ensure maximum resource utilization, anticipate and creatively address any challenges or opportunities, and maintain the organization in a positive financial position.
- Actively and directly engage in fundraising by making financial solicitations, overseeing event planning and grant writing, and cultivating relationships with individual donors, foundations, and other potential fiscal partners; initiate funding opportunities that ensure multiple streams of financial support that build long-term stability.
- Anticipate funding needs and engage staff and/or Board members as needed to ensure that staff have the resources they need to be successful and to support the continuity of important initiatives.
External Relations and Communications
- Serve as KIAC’s primary spokesperson to establish and maintain relationships with the immigrant community, nonprofit and government partners, funders, KIAC staff and Board, and the general public.
- Enhance KIAC’s image through active and visible participation in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic, governmental, and private organizations.
- Oversee marketing and other communications efforts, including social media, web presence, quarterly newsletter, annual report, and other printed collateral as needed.
Board Partnership
- Responsible, together with the Board of Directors, for strategic planning to ensure that KIAC can successfully fulfill its Mission.
- Communicate effectively with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
- Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.
- Listen to and actively respond to the needs of the Board and Board Committees.
Candidate Profile
KIAC encourages applications from individuals with a personal immigrant story or history, who are members of an underrepresented community, and/or are fluent in English and another language, ideally Spanish.
The ideal candidate will be a highly strategic and skilled organizational manager and fundraiser, and a team-oriented leader with a deep commitment to KIAC’s mission and vision. A proactive and transparent communicator, the Executive Director will be skilled at building effective, trusting relationships with staff, and will be committed to fostering collaboration with staff, Board, and volunteers. Experience working in a non-profit legal, education, policy, or advocacy organization with a focus on and passion for immigrants’ rights and a compassionate client-centered approach to the work is required.
KIAC recognizes that there is a spectrum of lived and professional experience that will set candidates up for success in this role. While no one candidate will have every experience outlined in the position description, ideal candidates will display many if not all of the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:
- Five years of professional senior level leadership experience with prior nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
- Experience translating strategy and vision into actionable, ambitious goals; ability to lead with influence and inspiration, and build collaboration and buy-in toward a common vision.
- Proven track record of successfully leading end-to-end projects; able to execute effectively under pressure with attention to detail, comfortable with multi-tasking and shifting priorities strategically and with flexibility when needed, and ability to solve problems creatively.
- Demonstrated ability to build capacity for long term organizational success including building upon current internal systems, structures, and policies; ability to identify and assess client needs and identify opportunities and funding to address those needs.
- History of responsibly and effectively managing a budget of similar size and complexity to KIAC’s; ability to connect KIAC to resources and opportunities outside the organization and steward those resources strategically.
- Demonstrated track record in fundraising specifically with grant writing; experience as a public speaker and storyteller; capable of establishing, deepening, and leveraging relationships with donors and other key stakeholders.
- History of building and maintaining a strong staff and partnering with senior leaders to develop the culture of the organization; able to act decisively, communicate decisions transparently, and delegate to and work cooperatively with senior leaders.
- A team player who inspires collaboration; flexible and well-organized; with a nuanced understanding of professional boundaries.
- Experience communicating with a broad array of stakeholders with empathy, sensitivity, and respect, with a history of working cross-culturally; understands trauma-informed care and applies a holistic approach to client service and staff management.
- A record of success working in partnership with a Board, staff, and volunteers, of diverse personalities and talents.
- A leader who is adept at understanding their strengths and areas for growth with a willingness to solicit and incorporate input from staff, Board, volunteers, and clients; a genuine desire to understand KIAC’s history and work with an ability to leverage past learnings for future successes.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $120,000. KIAC offers an excellent benefits package with KIAC paying 100% of the Employee Only portion of the medical plan. Employees are able to add dependents (at cost), and to opt in to employee paid health care options for vision and dental plans. In addition, KIAC recognizes 13 paid holidays and employees accrue 3 weeks of paid time off annually and 5 hours of sick leave monthly.
