The Opportunity
The Director of Performing Arts serves as the primary leader and strategist, external champion, builder, and internal manager for the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation’s Performing Arts program. This leader will build upon a well-established program to communicate effectively about arts activities and partner with leadership to develop the resources necessary to sustain arts programs of acknowledged excellence.
The Director is responsible for providing leadership on the Performing Arts program grants management, impact and data analysis, and the overall operational effectiveness of the program, ensuring regulatory compliance, and sharing grant information with program, finance, and communications staff. The Director will have many opportunities to create strategies, systems, and initiatives to generate enthusiasm for and excellence in the arts.
The Director will directly supervise the Program Officer, Performing Arts, a Program Associate, and a growing team. The Director will regularly strategize with the Managing Director, fellow Program Directors, and the Board. The Director will implement and oversee the use of data and analytics to inform funding decisions and future grantmaking strategies. The Director will also contribute to the growth and development of an exceptionally talented team as well as a connected, inclusive culture.
Candidate Profile
The Director of Performing Arts of the Paul M. Angell Foundation will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics, among others:
An Expert in Grantmaking
The Director will have experience in arts grantmaking, with grant writing activity a plus. The Director will lead with a creative approach to expanding and deepening the program. While knowledge of funding standards is a given, the ability to think outside the box and create new arts support structures is critical. An ability to understand, embrace, and serve grantee groups of all sizes is necessary.
A Credible and Passionate Performing Arts Leader
The Director will show a long-term dedication to the arts and culture (including arts education) and their transformative capacity. This leader must show professional expertise in one or more areas of the arts, preferably including classical music and/or theater. A master’s degree in some area of the arts – particularly with a focus in applied performing arts – is preferred.
The Director will be expected to interact with other arts funders at different levels, engaging in discussions to represent the Foundation’s presence and perspectives. Multi-funder initiatives should be approached, considered, and initiated as appropriate and necessary. The most critical partnerships are those with the organization’s grantees with whom they supply not just funding but also information of the field, promising practices of like grantees, and general advocacy. Embracing the concept of partnership with grantees in a shared mission is a primary component of the program’s ethos.
Well versed in the best practices of arts management, this leader will possess credibility to all types of artists. The Director will tap into a network of professional arts creators, performers, presenters, and educators to foster mutually productive relationships while also creating strong bonds with a diverse local group of staff and community leaders.
Strategic Leadership and Management Acumen
The Director must be able to manage the work of a team of program officers. Organization skills are a must. Another desired trait is the ability to work with, support, and encourage different kinds of personalities, rallying them around the common mission of arts and arts education.
The Director will be responsible for hiring new program staff and managing a growing team. Previous experience in this task is desired. This will require the ability to recognize talent and qualifications while avoiding bias. The possession of an open mind with regard to various artistic sources of grant-making talent is expected. The Director should also be able to assist in the continued building and molding of the program’s focal areas. Architectural preservation, art spaces, fine arts, and other areas within culture and the humanities are likely such topics.
Working as a member of a multi-program organization, the Director will be a partner and advisor to the Foundation leadership and Board. This leader must be able to articulate the program’s vision, both internally and externally. It is expected that this leader will use technology and data to provide compelling reports and presentations in order to continually understand and improve the program, its missions, and accomplishments.
A bachelor’s degree in some area of the performing arts is required, with music or theater preferred. A master’s degree in some aspect of the arts is highly desired, but an extensive, equivalent history of service to the arts will also be considered.
