About Daily Table
Daily Table is a nonprofit grocery chain with a mission to make healthy food affordable to all. Daily Table works to address the paradoxical occurrence of widespread hunger alongside sky-high rates of obesity and diet-related illness. Daily Table’s theory of change is that the main barriers to a healthy diet are economic and that making healthy food, especially fruits and vegetables, affordable in low-income communities can empower people to choose a wide variety of food that might otherwise be financially out of reach. They believe that delicious, wholesome, and affordable food should be available to all.
Founded in Massachusetts in 2012 by Doug Rauch, former President of Trader Joe’s, Daily Table operates five stores in the Greater Boston area and are developing plans for expansion across the United States. Daily Table offers customers a wide selection of fresh produce, meat and dairy, and frozen and pantry staples at prices designed to fit even a SNAP budget. They also sell delicious, healthy, SNAP-eligible prepared foods, made from scratch in the commissary kitchen that offers convenience and time-saving at prices lower than fast food alternatives. Regular price comparisons show that a sample basket of goods at Daily Table costs about 30% less than at supermarkets in the area. They also believe they are the only grocery store in America where an individual can eat a healthy, varied and culturally relevant diet using only their monthly SNAP allotment.
Many people who would otherwise qualify to use food pantries and other social services choose not to because of how it makes them feel. Daily Table’s stores provide a dignified shopping experience that enables people to eat well with the power of their own dollars, offering a helping hand rather than a handout. Their stores are located in easy-to-access locations, open evenings and weekends and provide a consistent and welcoming place for everyone to find high-quality, affordable food. They also createlivable wage jobs for the communities they serve, with a strong preference for hiring directly from these neighborhoods.
