ABOUT THE ILLINOIS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Illinois Chamber of Commerce is the state’s largest advocacy organization. As the unifying voice for business in Illinois, the Chamber focuses on representing the business community at the state level by working with state representatives, senators and the Governor’s Office to advance a pro-business agenda. The Illinois Chamber also works on the national level. Founded in 1919, the Chamber is a private nonprofit organization supported by member dues, contributions from a diverse group of primarily Illinois-based businesses and revenue generated by offering HR compliance educational seminars and materials.
Membership is comprised of businesses and organizations of all types and sizes across the State of Illinois. All components of Illinois’ economy are represented including manufacturing, financial services, transportation, technology, agriculture, mining, construction, utilities, professional services, local chambers of commerce, and other trade groups and membership organizations. While larger companies headquartered in Illinois such as Caterpillar, Deere, Motorola, and State Farm are members, small to mid-sized businesses make up the majority of the Chamber’s membership.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Illinois Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) seeks an experienced, passionate, mission driven Chief Executive Officer. Reporting to the Board of Directors’ Executive Committee, the CEO works closely with the Chamber’s Executive Leadership Team. The CEO will define the Chamber’s priorities and direction. While assessing and evaluating strategies, they will decide how the organization will differentiate itself from other like-minded organizations in the region, hire staff where necessary, forge alliances and build partnerships to further the Chamber mission. Working with the Board, the CEO will set important long-term and short-term goals for the organization and work systematically to meet them.
The CEO will play a formative role in building a culture focused on growing and retaining Chamber membership and legislative advocacy. The CEO will actively work on building its financial reserves and goodwill. In partnership with the finance team, the CEO will secure resources, work within annual budget parameters, allocate resources appropriately and be accountable for the financial health of the organization. With the need to have focused resources on membership revenue and financial operations, it is imperative for the CEO to hire and retain strong senior management to complement the CEO’s skills.
