About the National Museum of Mexican Art :
The mission of the National Museum of Mexican Art (“NMMA”) is to stimulate knowledge and appreciation of Mexican art and culture from both sides of the U.S. – Mexico border through a significant permanent collection of Mexican art, rich visual and performing arts programs, high quality arts education programs and resources, and professional development of Mexican artists. The Museum welcomes all people and strives to foster a world where all are included.
Centered in and for the community and located in the heart of Pilsen, a predominantly Mexican neighborhood just 8 minutes west of downtown Chicago, the NMMA hosts 150,000 visitors each year through its free admission program and boasts a collection of more than 18,000 seminal pieces of Mexican art from both sides of the U.S – Mexico border.
The NMMA serves as an advocate for cultural equity issues that extend beyond the arts and touch on education, immigration, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ issues, and health. Their physical space serves as the meeting point for countless groups seeking a safe and relevant gathering point to discuss the critically important topics that affect the lives of their constituents. From Mayors to Governors and Presidents to international dignitaries – the NMMA brings people together to address real life challenges and opportunities of importance.
Today, the National Museum of Mexican Art stands out as the most prominent first-voice institution for Mexican art and culture in the United States. The NMMA is also a national leader and mentor for culturally and ethnically focused institutions and serves as a lighthouse on social justice issues affecting Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and Latinos at the local, national, and international levels.
The Opportunity:
Carrying on its legacy, the NMMA is seeking a proven leader, with a deep appreciation of the Mexican experience in the U.S., who understands art, philanthropy, community, culture, and education. As the Museum enters this next chapter, the NMMA’s next President will lead the Museum to achieve even greater levels of impact, innovation, success, and representation – knowing that these external indicators derive from a forward looking organization with talented staff, strong partnerships in community, and a solid far-reaching relationship with arts organizations in the US, Mexico and around the world.
Building upon the strong reputation and established presence of the Museum. This leader will ensure the Museum remains part of the community, not apart from the community.
Inspired by a genuine care, commitment to, and understanding of Mexican culture and community, the President will be responsible for carrying out NMMA’s consistent achievement of its mission, strategic vision, and financial objectives.
The President will maintain current and develop new partnerships throughout the U.S., Mexico, and globally to an audience that is attuned to Mexican art in order to expand their constituent base geographically while they continue to serve their core group based in Chicago.
The President will work in collaboration and partnership with the senior leadership team, a passionate and committed Board of Directors, dedicated staff, donors, its community, and other key constituents.
The next President will step into an organization with a stable financial situation, a dedicated Board who understands their governance role, a strong executive team with extensive and varied industry experience, and a committed and driven multi-generational staff eager to continue keeping “el corazón” of the NMMA beating strongly.
Requirement:
The President of the National Museum of Mexican Art must be fluent in Spanish. This role will require both international and domestic travel.
