The Opportunity
Rewire News Group seeks an effective Executive Director to lead the organization through its next phase of growth and development. The Executive Director will be responsible for driving the strategic direction of the organization, overseeing operations, expanding fundraising efforts, and fostering partnerships that enhance our impact. This role requires a deep understanding of the US reproductive rights/ societal issues landscape, nonprofit management, fundraising and media operations.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring the overall success of the organization, with a particular emphasis on providing strategic clarity for Rewire News Group’s future growth, as well as the financial and revenue leadership necessary to sustain the organization’s current and future editorial and advocacy ambitions.
The Executive Director responsibilities include:
Vision and Strategy
- Partner with the Board to articulate the strategic planning and vision for Rewire News Group, ensuring its continued relevance in the current socio-political landscape.
- Continue to strengthen Rewire News Group as a leading voice and partner in the reproductive and sexual health, rights, and justice landscape.
- Ensure excellence in journalism.
Fundraising and Revenue Generation
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure financial support from diverse sources, including individual donors, foundations, and grants.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key donors and stakeholders, making direct asks as needed.
- Generate new sources of revenue and explore innovative fundraising opportunities and partnerships to ensure financial sustainability.
- Be an effective spokesperson and expert resource for individual and foundation donors regarding the status of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice, and the media landscape.
- Represent the organization at public events, conferences, and in the media.
Organizational Leadership
- Work closely with the Board of Directors, providing regular updates and involving them in strategic decision-making processes.
- Develop and implement plans and budgets to achieve Rewire News Group’s revenue goals, including meeting annual financial targets, and ensuring long-term financial sustainability.
- Support the implementation and optimization of programmatic systems and processes that ensure Rewire News Group is deploying best practices in support of its mission and people.
- Provide organizational and operational clarity, including alignment of staff roles, systems and processes to maximize impact and effective workflows.
Team Management and Culture Building
- Recruit, develop and retain a highly talented and diverse team at all levels of Rewire News Group and be a driving force in fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.
- Establish a shared culture across teams, ensuring all Rewire News Group employees are collaborating with a unified sense of purpose, accountability, transparency, and excellence.
- Continue to evolve Rewire News Group’s culture specifically as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion to ensure the organization is attracting, retaining and growing the very best talent at all levels of the organization.
- Cultivate a spirit of creativity, innovation and collaboration.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills and characteristics:
- Proven track record of leadership in a nonprofit organization, preferably within the sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice fields.
- Strong preference for candidates with journalism experience, particularly in digital media or reporting on sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice.
- Experience working in media or advocacy organizations and an understanding of the unique challenges facing nonprofit media organizations is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising and development, with a successful history of securing major gifts and grants.
- The ability to build and retain trust while navigating complex organizational dynamics.
- Experience managing organizational transformation and guiding teams through periods of change.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to think outside the box and develop innovative solutions to challenges.
- Commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaborative leadership.
- Ability to handle sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion.
- Experienced in successfully managing and leading a fully remote team, ensuring high performance and engagement across diverse geographic locations.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $180,000 - $200,000 with a generous benefits package.
Rewire News Group is a fully remote organization with some travel expected and required.
