The Search
Miami University (Miami), an original Public Ivy and Top 75 National Public University, invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the College of Arts and Science (CAS) position. Miami seeks an exceptional leader with a strong record of collaboration, a forward-looking vision, and significant academic accomplishment and administrative experience. The new dean will have the opportunity to lead the 23 departments and 25 affiliated centers and institutes in CAS through their next phase of strategic planning. The dean will lead the largest college at Miami, representing nearly half of all students, with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and a diverse set of programs, many of which are interdisciplinary.

The University serves the citizens of the state of Ohio, as well as an established regional and an increasingly national constituency.
The University
Miami University was chartered by the Ohio General Assembly in 1809. The University offered its first classes in 1824 in the village of Oxford, Ohio. By 1829, it had grown to 250 students, making it the fourth-largest university in the nation, following Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth. The University admitted its first women students in 1902. In 1905, Nellie Craig Walker became the first Black graduate. The breadth of its undergraduate and master’s programs grew throughout the 20th century, and in 1964, the Ohio Board of Regents approved the inauguration of Ph.D. programs.
The beautiful grounds and the gracious Georgian-style buildings of the 2,000-acre Oxford campus inspired poet Robert Frost to declare the Miami University campus "the most beautiful college that ever there was." Miami has worked consistently over the last 20 years to promote a green campus through recycling, energy reduction, and in its new construction and building maintenance; Miami is a signatory to Second Nature’s Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitment (Climate Commitment). The College
Miami’s College of Arts and Science (CAS) enrolls 8300 undergraduate and graduate students, with 373 full-time faculty members and 195 staff members.
Our rich diversity of academic programs includes 60 majors, 11 co-majors, and dozens of minors, all of which provide critical thinking and communication skills and present a broad range of opportunities and experiences. We design these programs to cultivate intellect and creativity and to encourage empathy and working for the common good, all of which are key building blocks to career success in our ever-changing, globally-minded workforce.
The College of Arts and Science (CAS) is the centerpiece of liberal arts education at Miami University and the largest academic division on campus. As such, the College encompasses a rich diversity of disciplinary opportunities and experiences across the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, languages, mathematics/data science, and interdisciplinary programs. CAS is home to 23 departments providing over 60 majors for undergraduate study. CAS offers three undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, and the Bachelor of Science.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, the dean is the chief administrative, academic, and budgetary officer for the College of Arts and Science. The dean serves as a role model of integrity and professionalism for the College's faculty and is accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff. The dean collaborates closely with other deans and others across the University, the regional community, the nation, and the globe to coordinate academic and creative programs, interdisciplinary initiatives, and traditional and cross-disciplinary scholarship. The dean will also work collaboratively with the College to advance, create, and implement programs consonant with the University's strategic plan.
The dean is the public face of the College of Arts and Science. The dean will possess a strong understanding and love of the humanities, liberal arts, social sciences and STEM fields. They will have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial way across Miami University, adapt and evolve the CAS curriculum to fit the changing world, recognize the importance of community among its Miami students and alums, and create a thriving network that will sustain the growth and support of CAS into the future.
