The University of California, Berkeley College of Chemistry, ranked among the very top in the world in its fields of study, seeks a dynamic leader and accomplished scholar to serve as the next Dean of the College of Chemistry.
A public, R1 doctoral university, in the Association of American Universities (AAU), UC Berkeley is home to more than 33,000 undergraduates and more than 12,000 graduate students. The University is internationally renowned for excellence and pioneering achievements across all disciplines. At the heart of its preeminence are approximately 1,500 ladder-rank faculty across 15 schools and colleges. Berkeley’s professors are highly distinguished researchers, scholars, and leading experts in their fields, as attested by their many Nobel Prizes, other distinguished awards, and memberships in the most prestigious learned societies. The central mission of the College of Chemistry is to advance society through education and research, and the College honors that mission by educating students who become world class scientists, researchers, educators, and entrepreneurs. Enrolling nearly 1,000 undergraduates and over 500 graduate students, the College of Chemistry also supports a robust postdoctoral system, with over 100 postdocs conducting advanced scientific research under the College’s faculty guidance. The College offers undergraduate students a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Biology, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, and two joint majors in Chemical Engineering and Material Science Engineering and in Chemical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering. The College also offers graduate degrees, including a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, two professional master’s degrees, an online professional master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering degree, and doctoral degrees in both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. With more than 15,000 active alumni, graduates of the College of Chemistry go on to work worldwide across universities, national laboratories, corporations, government agencies, nonprofit foundations, and innovative startups.
The next Dean of the College of Chemistry will join and lead an exceptionally talented and accomplished community across faculty, staff, and students. The Dean will have the opportunity to advance the academic vision and steward the future strategic direction for the College in a way that is rooted in the University’s commitment to academic excellence across teaching, research, and global impact.
The Dean is the chief academic officer and executive officer of the College of Chemistry. The Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) and has 10 direct reports, including the undergraduate dean, one executive associate dean, one associate dean, three senior assistant deans, two department chairs, and two staff. The Dean is responsible for the management of the College’s annual budget of approximately $56 million plus $44 million in contracts and grants.
The Dean’s main responsibilities include:
● Serve as the chief academic officer of the College;
● Provide leadership in and oversight of the College’s instructional, outreach, and research missions;
● Provide personnel oversight for the College, including the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and staff, and support for professional growth and development;
● Oversee the College’s budget and long-term planning, including providing recommendations to the University about the allocation of faculty lines (FTE) among the departments;
● Provide leadership for the College’s development and alumni activities and partner with the development team to meet fundraising goals;
● Advocate persuasively for the College’s programs both within and beyond the campus community;
● Support students at all levels;
● Work actively with other deans and foster cross-campus collaborations; and
● Promote diversity, equity, and an inclusive campus climate.
