Valley Health’s Heart and Vascular Center offers multidisciplinary specialty clinical programs  designed to treat a wide variety of cardiovascular disorders. For more than 40 years, Winchester Medical Center has offered state-of-the-art cardiovascular treatment and effective resources for patients throughout the region.

WMC has had a strong and proud tradition in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, with over 35 years of continuous service, highlighted by many outstanding accomplishments and successes. The program has participated in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons database since its inception and has accomplished 3-STAR designation for CABG in the recent past. Along with a database team, the team actively engages with the Virginia Cardiac Services Quality Initiative (VCSQI) which drives quality and efficiency initiatives statewide, where Valley Health’s cardiac service has been and remains a top-decile performer in many key metrics.

Position Overview

Valley Health seeking a seasoned, proven leader with advanced expertise in surgical mitral valve therapy, TAVR, and (preferably) trans-catheter mitral valve therapy to serve as Program Director and Co-Director of the Structural Heart Program to lead the continued growth of the advanced cardiovascular surgery program.

The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with the ability to create and implement a multi-year strategic plan that results in:

  • M.D. with board certification(s) by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
  • Eligible for unrestricted licensure for the state of Virginia.
  • Advanced expertise in surgical mitral valve therapy is required.
  • TAVR experience is required.
  • Broad capabilities in the surgical management of adult cardiac surgery, including state-of-the-art CABG, all aspects of valvular heart surgery, including advanced surgical and minimally invasive approaches for valve procedures.
  • Capabilities in aortic reconstruction (including aortic root) for aneurysm and dissection, surgery for atrial fibrillation, and re-operative cardiac surgery. TEVAR experience is preferred.
  • Trans-catheter mitral valve experience, including Mitra-Clip, is preferred.
  • Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) implantation as a primary operator and experience with a strong, multidisciplinary mechanical circulatory support management team is preferred. As a minimum, willingness to be trained is required.
  • Track record of clinical excellence, as proven by 3 consecutive years of outstanding STS database personal outcomes, is required.
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with referring cardiologist to expand business and provide best possible care for patients.
  • Demonstrate use of the Heart Team as a core element of patient care.
  • Proven leader with integrated approach to growing the Cardiovascular Service Line.
  • Strong orientation toward Patient-Focused Care, quality improvement, team building and profitability.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a business development capacity.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to actively participate in creating a productive environment that promotes initiative, innovation, and continual learning.
  • Demonstration of professional competence and ethical standards that allow the Director, ASVT to serve as a role model.
