UPMC health care system is actively recruiting for a Vice President of Operations for UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA.  A Magnet-designated 458-bed hospital, UPMC Hamot offers a full complement of inpatient and outpatient services and serves as a regional, tertiary referral hub and Level II Trauma Center supported by 3,630 employees and over 650 physicians.

Signature services include bariatric surgery; the UPMC Hamot Breast Center; behavioral health; the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center; heart and vascular; a comprehensive lung center; kidney transplant services; the UPMC Hamot Neuroscience Institute; and a state-of-the-art facility which includes a Level III Neonatal ICU to meet the health care needs of women and infants in the greater Erie community.

Reporting to the President of UPMC Hamot who also serves as the Market President of NW PA, Central PA and NY State, the Vice President, Operations for UPMC Hamot is a member of a collaborative executive management group and is responsible for providing executive operational management.  This position oversees the operational performance and financial outcomes of various departments including clinical and nonclinical services and is responsible as well for developing standards of care and practice that result in the delivery of the optimal patient experience.  In collaboration with the President, the Vice President recommends, develops and updates strategic, long-range plans to support the philosophy and goals of the institution.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in business, healthcare administration or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive operations and management experience in a hospital or health system.
  • Track record of accomplishments ideally in a complex, matrixed integrated delivery system environment.  Good tenure and stability.
  • Superb communications skills, both written and verbal, and organization and human relations skills.
  • Action and results-oriented combined with the ability to establish key goals, and drive and track results among multiple decision-makers and stakeholders and meet deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to use influence and lead/drive results, achieving alignment between often conflicting priorities, initiatives, and people.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and foster relationships through Integrity and Trust.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented servant leadership mentality.

Located on the southern shore of its namesake lake, Erie is Pennsylvania’s primary access point to the Great Lakes.  It is the county seat of Erie County and the largest city in Northwestern Pennsylvania and the fifth largest city in Pennsylvania with a population of 94,831 at the 2020 census. The Erie metropolitan area consists of 266,096 residents. 

Erie’s manufacturing sector remains prominent in the local economy, though healthcare, higher education, technology, service industries, and tourism are emerging as significant economic drivers. Over four million people visit Erie each summer for recreation at Presque Isle State Park and attractions such as Waldameer Park and the Erie Zoo.
