The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking a dynamic, visionary, and academically accomplished leader to serve as Director, Cancer Center and Research Institute (CCRI) to support its missions of health care, education, and research.
Located in Jackson, the University of Mississippi Medical Center is the State’s sole academic health science center. UMMC is comprised of University Hospital, its 697-bed flagship that houses Mississippi’s only Level 1 trauma center, Level 4 neonatal intensive care nursery unit, and organ transplant program. UMMC also encompasses two community hospitals, UMMC Holmes County and UMMC Grenada, as well as three specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus consisting of the State’s only children’s hospital, a women and infants’ hospital, and a critical care hospital. University Physicians, the faculty group practice of the School of Medicine, includes approximately 500 doctors who care for patients in the hospitals and clinics on campus, around the Jackson metro area, and in outreach clinics across the state.
The Medical Center’s three-part mission is to improve the lives of Mississippians by educating tomorrow’s health care professionals, conducting health sciences research, and providing cutting-edge patient care. A major goal of the Medical Center is the elimination of differences in health status of Mississippians based on race, geography, income, or social status.
With more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. The Medical Center’s $1.6 billion annual budget – approximately one-tenth from state appropriations – represents 10 percent of the Jackson metro area economy and two percent of the state economy. UMMC continues to grow in all its mission areas.
Diversity and inclusion are integral to the core vision of UMMC and its three mission areas. UMMC commits to attracting and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce and student body to achieve mission-driven outcomes in the diverse Mississippi communities we serve.
The search for a Director of the Cancer Center and Research Institute (CCRI) comes at a time when UMMC has made cancer services a major priority with a total planned investment of $200M in cancer programs for operational resources and construction of a dedicated cancer facility. UMMC has endorsed a cancer strategic plan to bridge the clinical and research aspects of the UMMC CCRI as well as inpatient and outpatient care settings. The UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute includes the State’s only pediatric oncology group, BMT unit, and Cancer Phase 1 Clinical Trials unit. The CCRI also has 12 individual UMMC tumor boards, extensive state-of-the-art basic science labs for oncology, and oversees Mississippi’s Cancer Registry.
Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs, this Director will establish a nationally known clinical program based on a patient centered care model with the highest quality outcomes. In addition, further development of a robust clinical trial and translational research program with thriving clinical and research partnerships is a high priority.
