The Opportunity

The Asian American Foundation, a leading voice in the anti-AAPI hate movement, is searching for their first Head of Communications who will serve a critically important role in crafting and directing the overall strategy for TAAF’s communications and messaging, building strong relationships with community, peers, partners, corporations, elected officials, and other constituents, along with the press on all media platforms.

This is a specific opportunity for the right leader to join an incredible organization as the Head of Communications for one of the most highly publicized foundations in the AAPI community. At this exciting phase for TAAF, the organization will be experiencing tremendous growth as the Foundation scales its operations to effectively fulfills its mission of accelerating opportunity and prosperity for the AAPI community.

The Head of Communications will provide clear, actionable thought leadership around the Foundation’s communications strategies, initiatives, and programs, and will oversee the successful implementation of its complex agenda to broaden programmatic reach and deepen impact.

Candidate Profile

The Head of Communications will serve as the organizational leader of all communications activities at TAAF, prioritizing the organization’s long-term vision while creating clear stories to translate its mission to all audiences. The ideal candidate will be nimble, strategic, and collaborative, and will provide critically important direction and feedback to the Chief Executive Officer, Board and staff on all areas related to messaging and communications. This leader will have an essential role in advising around a range of issues as they emerge, including possible crisis communications. The Head of Communications will have a strong communications, public relations and media background, exceptional relationship-building skills, and excellent writing skills to complement an entrepreneurial, visionary mindset.

Strategic & Entrepreneurial Leadership

The Head of Communications will be an entrepreneurial and strategic leader with the knowledge, foresight, and clarity to inform decision-making around communications and public relations. The Head of Communications will be nimble in adjusting to shifting priorities and able to balance multiple tasks efficiently and effectively. This individual will anticipate, analyze, and interpret complex problems, achieving sustainable, creative solutions, with the flexibility and confidence to participate fully, working alongside the CEO and Board. This individual will be an advocate for and mentor to staff and peer leadership, creating and identifying opportunities for growth and development.

Communications & Public Relations Expertise

The Head of Communications will be an experienced communications and public relations leader with a strong understanding and demonstrated track of optimizing social media platforms and strategies. The Head of Communications will be a passionate storyteller and proactive advocate for TAAF in all aspects of the media. This leader will create TAAF’s communications strategy, craft responses on behalf of the organization for any issues that may arise, and successfully develop and run social media campaigns. This individual will come to TAAF with immediate access to a wide range of media contacts and relationships.

Exceptional Communicator & Manager

The Head of Communications will be an engaged, active listener, able to communicate effectively with a broad group of stakeholders and outlets – from members of the general public to policymakers and influencers – and to tailor communications to suit each audience. The Head of Communications will be a leader known in the community for honesty, their willingness to listen, discretion, and a keen mind. Possessing exceptional verbal and written communications, this leader will be relied upon for good business judgment, an analytical mindset, and the capability to make sound and influential decisions. This individual will  build and mentor a communications team while creating and identifying opportunities for their growth and development.

Relationship Builder & Collaborator

This leader will be adept at building and sustaining excellent relationships with board members, staff, community leaders, media, peer organizations, and other various stakeholder groups, and harnessing their professional networks in support of TAAF. This individual will be a key spokesperson, proactively messaging what TAAF is and the impact of its work. A natural consensus-builder, the Head of Communications will be comfortable with ambiguity and have the persistence to drive process forward through collaboration and dedication.

The Head of Communications will have a true passion for the vision of TAAF – effectively take action against hate and violence, and build the infrastructure needed to improve AAPI advocacy, power, and representation across American society. This individual will have the intellectual curiosity needed to understand and communicate TAAF’s work to a wide range of stakeholders. Compensation & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role will be based on a range, starting at $180,000 and commensurate with the successful candidate’s skills and experience.

This is a permanent, full-time, exempt position and is eligible for TAAF’s comprehensive benefit package of medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid time off, flexible spending accounts, and 401k retirement options.
