About Seed Savers Exchange

Since 1975, Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) has served as a pioneer in the heirloom seed movement and steadfast advocate for preserving, circulating, and increasing accessibility of rare and heirloom seeds. In a climate of rapidly declining biodiversity, SSE has risen, grown, evolved, and ushered an era of increased awareness and commitment to using diverse seed varieties at home and in the marketplace. A steward of America’s culturally diverse and endangered garden and food crop legacy, we educate and connect people through collecting, regeneration, and sharing heirloom seeds, plants, and stories.

Based in Decorah, Iowa, SSE has a national membership of over 13,000 individuals, manages an annual budget of $6M, and employs over 70 full-time staff. Along with our programming, SSE maintains Heritage Farm, where staff curate and grow more than 30,000 varieties of seeds for evaluation and preservation, raise heritage livestock breeds, and welcome 12,000 – 14,000 visitors each year to their 890 scenic acres. Heritage Farm is a model for sustainable farming and plays an important role in preserving native species and habitats, including a stream with a population of native brook trout as well as mature hardwood forests that provide habitat for rare plant species and migratory songbirds.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Seed Savers Exchange Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead our organization through the next phase of our strategic plan and position the SSE brand as a leading educational resource, seed bank, and source for open-pollinated and heirloom varieties — both nationally and globally. We seek a compelling storyteller, an effective communicator, and a perceptive leader who recognizes and cherishes our role as seed stewards, acknowledges the differing ways that manifests itself in our work, and honors our seeds and their histories.
