Grant Cooper is seeking a Senior Associate Dean of Research to serve Central Michigan University College of Medicine, Mt. Pleasant, MI.The Central Michigan University (CMU) College of Medicine (CMED) is seeking a Senior Associate Dean of Research to lead the growth of its research program and support its mission to train future doctors to serve the local community as physicians and physician scientists. CMED is a newly formed medical school established to train physicians focusing on primary care specialties. The college received full accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medicine Education (LCME) in June 2018, making it the 147th accredited medical school in the country.

Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine graduated its second class of physicians in May 2018. The college was created to prepare diverse, culturally competent physicians focused on improving access to high-quality healthcare, with an emphasis on rural and medically underserved regions. Graduates aspire to excellence in providing patient-centered and evidence-based care to their patients and communities. Physicians are engaged in leading healthcare transformation, lifelong learning and team-based education.

Many large and historic medical schools focus on preparing researchers and the most highly paid specialists. CMU’s Board of Trustees, in contrast, approved the College of Medicine specifically to address the significant need for doctors in rural and medically underserved urban communities. These areas already are experiencing the impact of what is expected to be a shortage of 4,000 to 6,000 physicians in Michigan by 2020.  A partnership between CMU and two Saginaw hospitals — St. Mary’s of Michigan and Covenant HealthCare — also manages seven residency programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in an effort to help address this shortage.

CMED educates students and residents, provides clinical care and conducts research programs. CMED is located primarily in Mt. Pleasant and Saginaw, Michigan. The Saginaw operation has been developed in partnership with Covenant Healthcare and St. Mary’s of Michigan through a separate corporation, CMU Medical Education Partners, that manages seven residency programs.

CMED refers to its Saginaw location as its east campus and its Mt. Pleasant location as its west campus. The west campus is the primary site for education of first and second year medical students, for its central administration (this includes general administration, clinical, research and education administration) and for the conduct of its research programs. The east campus is the primary site for education of third and fourth year medical students, training of residents in CMU clinics, and local graduate medical education administration.

As a member of the Dean’s Executive Leadership Team, develop and implement a collaborative administrative operation supporting the mission of the College of Medicine (CMED) and CMU Medical Education Partners (Partners). Aid in strategic planning, development, and implementation in support of the research mission of the college for medical students, GME programs and faculty. This position will oversee the growth and development of CMED’s research programs. The ideal candidate will be a visionary builder with a record of research and engagement with rural and underserved areas and have a track record of independent extramural funding. This position will facilitate research scholarship and resource development within the College of Medicine and work collaboratively with other CMU deans, the CMU Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS), key external stakeholders, and other senior leaders to achieve synergies across the research enterprises at CMU, CMED, and Partners.

Responsible for oversight of research, research facilities, research administration, legal and risk management programs as they relate to research, and information technology programs as they relate to research. Assure alignment with the university’s mission, assure responsiveness to the needs of the state, and assure a program of superior quality meeting the standards of the LCME, ACGME, HLC and other accrediting bodies.

Reporting Relationship

The Senior Associate Dean for Research functions as a Senior Officer at CMU and serves as an at-will employee to the University President. The position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine and works in cooperation with appropriate university offices and within existing university policies, procedures, and practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree, PhD and/or MD/DO with an emphasis in health service research, public health, public administration or other related health disciplines.
  • Qualification for Professor rank at CMU College of Medicine.
  • Five years’ experience in a university-based medical or public health school or research institution overseeing and conducting research.
  • Five years of senior leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience of securing extramural funding to support research initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in building/growing new research programs, ideally multi-disciplinary and/or multi-organizational research collaborations.
  • Demonstrated creativity in building research partnerships and identifying research funding opportunities within their own institution and beyond, including in partnership with public and private community entities, corporate partners, foundations, and state/ federal agencies.
  • Demonstrated strong administrative and research management skills with experience in compliance with research regulations and accreditation.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, developing, and coordinating strategic research plans that are consistent with an organizational mission.
  • Demonstrated understanding of working with both basic science and health service researchers.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as an externally-facing representative of the institution to key partners and stakeholders in the community and beyond.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity by working to develop a culture of inclusion and mutual respect.  
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring junior faculty to help them obtain research funding to pursue meaningful lines or inquiry.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall research administration of the College of Medicine and its affiliated programs.
  • Represents the dean on strategic issues or administrative committees where appropriate.
  • Represents the operations of medical school to external partners, affiliates, contractors, and accrediting bodies, where appropriate.
  • Leads development of the research mission and program for CMED.
  • Oversees and contributes to the research teaching programs for both medical students and residents
  • Mentors junior faculty.
  • Actively involved in teaching medical students in coordination with the SAD for Academic Affairs.
  • Establishes and conducts a competitive independent and/or collaborative research program in candidate’s relevant area of expertise.
  • Applies for and obtains external funding, independently and/or in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Publishes research findings in the form of peer-reviewed journals, books, and other relevant venues.
  • Presents research at regional, national, and international conferences.
  • Initiates and maintains collaborations with other CMU colleges and community organizations.
  • Oversees research initiatives for both medical students and residents.
  • Oversees the process for allocation and re-allocation of research space.
  • Oversees the process for research recruitment/start-up packages with the discipline chairs.
  • Facilitates coordination of research across domains of research: educational, basic, clinical, population, health systems, and translational research.
  • Develops and maintains research administrative policies, procedures, and operations to maintain effective functioning of the College of Medicine.
  • Develops an effective research risk management program as it relates to research for the College of Medicine, in collaboration with the Risk Management office.
  • Provides leadership and collaboration as it relates to research in the following areas:
    • information technology strategic plan, implementation, staffing and infrastructure
    • contracts and affiliation agreements
    • development and operation of compliance programs
  • Assists with planning and implementation of strategies leading to the sustained accreditation of the educational program leading to the MD degree.
  • Works collaboratively with the senior leadership, faculty, and staff of university offices regarding policies, procedures, and issues.
  • Teaches medical school topics in areas of expertise when appropriate.
