About Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts

Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts (PPESA), is a statewide electoral and legislative advocacy organization, and political action committee (PAC). PPESA is New York’s health care partner in ensuring statewide access to family planning services and reproductive health care, as well as being part of the larger Planned Parenthood network, including other states and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. PPESA supports New York’s Planned Parenthood Affiliates by advocating for public health policies that promote a sound health care system and fights efforts to curtail access to care.  PPESA’s mission is to help build a world in which every person — regardless of their race, income, insurance, gender identity, sexual orientation, abilities, or immigration status — can access expert, compassionate sexual and reproductive health care, information, and education without shame or judgement.

PPESA is committed to advocating for policies that boldly expand access to affordable, quality health care, strengthen sexual and reproductive rights, and dismantle the systemic racism that permeates the systems that form our society. The Opportunity

The next CEO of PPESA will be someone authentically aligned and has a deep personal commitment to the mission and strategy of the organization. The CEO will take a holistic view on reproductive health and access. They will be a natural problem solver and thrive in fostering clarity and alignment in complexity by identifying strategic solutions that deliver results and align with PPESA’s values.

Reporting into the PPESA Board of Directors, the CEO will be politically savvy with an understanding of policy and advocacy to set and protect the Affiliates’ legislative agendas.  With a keen sense of sensitivity and diplomacy, the next leader of PPESA will be able to navigate in a nuanced and complex environment on a number of different agenda items to advance reproductive health and access in New York state.  As a spokesperson, they will represent PPESA through media appearances, speaking engagements, and partnerships with aligned organizations and coalitions.

The CEO will lead a team of mission-driven and passionate individuals with a commitment to fostering an inclusive culture where individuals can show up as their authentic selves.  In addition, the CEO will embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion both internally and externally in continued support of the communities PPESA serves. 

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate for this role will be a collaborative and communicative leader who understands how to move a wide range of constituents and lead through inspiration and motivation. 

While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, a successful candidate will bring many of the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Passion for Mission and Sector Experience

  • Embodiment of the values and mission of PPESA to inspire and motivate others to action
  • Pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach including but not limited to demonstrated skills in multi-constituent outreach, coordination, and collaboration across ideological lines
  • Comfortable working in a complex environment with many different constituents

Policy and Advocacy

  • Lead policy and advocacy initiatives in partnership with the Affiliates to develop and implement legislative agendas, strategy, and legislative action plans and oversee those efforts
  • Develop relationships with potential and current electoral candidates
  • Provide strategy and oversight for legislative sessions including tracking key issues and potential positive and negative legislation
  • Strong analytical skills necessary to discern the progress, benefits, and challenges of a policy agenda
  • Experience working on large scale advocacy and engagement campaigns and initiatives and legislative agendas, reproductive rights preferred but not required
  • Will be an astute political operator with the know-how to navigate state bureaucracy 

External Relations

  • Will serve as an external ambassador with media, donors, partner organizations, and other important constituents while representing PPESA’s mission to the community
  • Work with board and affiliate staff to think about raising visibility and revenue
  • Builds and manages strategic partnerships and alliances with organizations and individuals to advance PPESA’s mission
  • Elevates PPESA’s brand and priorities to increase visibility across key constituents and potential allies in Albany and the State House

Strategic and Organizational Leadership

  • Ability to lead through change and growth in the evolving landscape of reproductive rights
  • Demonstrated success in team leadership, with a successful track record of recruiting, inspiring, and retaining a diverse, mission-driven team
  • Cultivate a strong working relationship with PPESA’s Board and affiliate leadership

Nonprofit Operations and Finance

  • Bring strong experience with strategic financial planning and a comprehensive record of overseeing various functions of an organization
  • Responsible for development and implementation of an annual budget, including management of dues from affiliates and fundraising structure
  • Oversight of all operational and administrative functions

In addition, strong candidates will offer:

  • Strong commitment to PPESA’s mission, values, and strategic plan, with experience in movement building, policy, and advocacy
  • Experience in developing of a set of advocacy priorities based on affiliate needs and priorities
  • Exceptional communication skills including writing, speaking, meeting facilitation, and consensus building
  • An organized systems thinker who brings an organizational architecture lens, with a balanced, non-partisan approach
  • Collegial, team-oriented, and can-do working style
  • Track record of creative problem solving
  • The ability to be both strategic and involved in the day-to-day
  • Engender trust and followership in others through compelling influence and passionate in their beliefs
  • Ability to manage the short-term dynamics that require rapid response, without losing focus on the longer-term, bigger picture
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience
  • Understanding and respect for populations with diverse cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds either through lived or professional experience

This position is full-time with a starting salary of $200,000 annually.  PPESA is committed to pay equity and is open to hearing from the market.
