About Oxfam America

Oxfam is a global organization that fights inequality to end poverty and injustice. We offer life-saving support in times of crisis and advocate for economic justice, gender equality, and climate action. We demand equal rights and equal treatment so that everyone can thrive, not just survive. Oxfam is working with partners to strengthen the capacity of vulnerable and remote communities in Central America and the Asia-Pacific region to manage disasters. Our goal is to enable partners and at-risk communities to co-lead (with government authorities) on disaster preparedness, response, and risk reduction.

Oxfam works together with more than 3,500 partner organizations, as well as allies in nearly 70 countries. With nearly 80 years of experience, we have learned what it takes to fight inequality and mobilize people and resources worldwide to make it happen. In 2018-2019 Oxfam’s 21 global affiliates collectively spent $1.2 billion and reached more than 19.4 million people through our global programs. As an affiliate, Oxfam America (OUS) holds a critical responsibility for strategic and operational support and partnership with countries and regions where Oxfam works—and for US advocacy, fundraising, and domestic programming for the global confederation.

OUS plays three roles in joint efforts with Oxfam country offices, affiliates, allies, and partners all over the world to deliver on our key pillars of our strategy:

  • Advocate. We use our access to governments, corporations, multilateral institutions, and influencers to leverage change. Our advocacy is grounded in the priorities of partners and allies and in lived experience of communities paired with research and analysis. We mobilize our supporters to create change.
  • Connect. We use our reach and access to convene unlikely allies to negotiate differences and create new opportunities for change. We connect dots, analyzing trends to inform collective action. We connect US supporters to Oxfam’s global work so they can bring their resources – voices, money, and ideas—to bear.
  • Amplify. We help the voices of people and communities experiencing marginalization be heard by the powerful and the public. We engage and support the agendas of our partners and allies with our capacities, expertise, and access. We do not accept US government funding and instead build broad-based independent support.

This is a time of celebration and transformation at Oxfam America (OUS). OUS’ 50-year anniversary was in 2020, and we recently completed a new 2030 Strategic Framework with a mission to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice. OUS will accomplish this mission by meeting immediate humanitarian needs and addressing root causes of poverty, collaborating, and innovating on a global scale—and with a commitment to measurably and radically shifting resources and power to people experiencing marginalization. OUS pledges to revolutionize the way that it works, by being more open, humble, and collaborative.

OUS’ 2020-2030 Strategic Framework highlights four focus areas to fulfill our mission to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice. Each highlight what we stand for, the problems we address, and the solutions we offer. We focus on: Economic Justice & Equal Rights; Humanitarian Response; Women’s Rights and Gender Justice; and Climate Action. We will tackle imbalances in power and put marginalized people—especially women—at the center of our work. We will leverage the power of the US for positive impact in the world and work to curtail its harm. We will fight inequality in the US. We recognize that inequality and humanitarian crises cross borders and make connections between our domestic and global efforts. We recognize the outsized influence of the US’s role in the world as well as the deep and entrenched issues of domestic inequality and poverty. Being rooted and active in the US and engaged and connected globally helps us embrace inequality and poverty as global phenomena, not something that happens to others elsewhere. OUS supports and contributes to global impact, which includes the US and a particular focus on strong collaboration with partners in Latin America.
