O&E hosts the annual Workplace Summit where employees and experts from across the globe gather to share strategies and best practices to create diverse and inclusive workplaces that foster belonging for LGBTQ people around the world. Our stakeholders are predominantly working in Fortune 1000 companies (global multi-nationals) and US government agencies. Besides the US, we focus on the LatAm (Brazil), India and APAC regions. In the US, we are focused on the Southern States/rural areas where efforts to achieve LGBTQ equality may face specific cultural challenges or nuances.

Led by CEO Erin Uritus, O&E is a global convener, thought leader, and catalyst actively working to achieve workplaces of equality and belonging. O&E provides critical value supporting LGBTQ employees and professionals who thrive in their careers and lives and want to achieve greater impact on the world. O&E has an annual budget between $7-9M and employs 20+ staff. While O&E offices are based in Oakland, CA and Washington, DC, candidates from DC or New York, NY are preferred.

The Opportunity

O&E seeks a seasoned, strategic professional who desires a new opportunity to join an entrepreneurial nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering welcoming, inclusive workplaces that create a culture of belonging for all. A compelling storyteller, writer, and strategist, the Senior Director for Communications will be a key thought partner to collaborators at all levels of the organization and will be integral to elevating and amplifying O&E’s impact and engagement across a global audience. This position reports directly to the CEO and directly supervises a team of two and external contractors/vendors. Tasked with developing an efficient, effective, strategic communications strategy that positions O&E to champion an inclusive working environment, they will:

  • Position O&E as a leader in workplace equity and inclusivity, advance the organizational brand, and ensure a symbiotic voice in the design, language, and aesthetic of public-facing materials.
  • Develop, direct, and implement an effective, responsive public relations strategy.
  • Advance O&E’s program, events, and thought leadership in the media markets, (including social media) with an emphasis on O&E’s programs, media advocacy, and support for tentpole programs and
  • Provide consultation and training for board and staff to ensure effective implementation of communications initiatives, including O&E’s brand in the marketplace.
  • Create innovative collateral to advance O&E’s work and share new developments in a compelling and relevant narrative to corporate, philanthropic, and mainstream audiences.
  • Lead the development and execution of rollout plans to help ensure that programs, events, and activities reach their respective audiences and advance larger organizational strategies.
  • Devise and implement strategies that effectively reach and expand O&E’s key audiences and advance organizational priorities via traditional and digital media, social media channels, organizational website, programs, and events. This includes original analysis of existing outreach, its processes and revamping internal systems and databases.
  • Create a brand/marketing/public relations strategy that allows O&E executive and board leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with high-level external audiences, including high-ranking corporate executives, media, donors, public officials, and key influencers.
  • Work with the board and executive leadership team to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions while defining and deploying effective strategies to address them.

They find inspiration in problem-solving and exhibit nimbleness in implementing and sustaining new, effective systems. They have a strong grasp of their own strengths, leveraging their teams and/or external consultants to create powerful and compelling campaigns that raise external awareness, and facilitate seamless internal communications.

Technical Communications Expertise

Exemplary Written and Oral Communications Skills

An excellent writer and communicator, they exhibit a demonstrated ability to prepare timely, effective, and engaging written materials (speeches, Op-eds, proposals, etc.) for global audiences. A senior communications professional, they possess exceptional public speaking skills, with extensive experience pitching and presenting to senior leaders, boards, and high-level external partners.

Data-driven Decision-making

Data-driven, innovative, and creative, the successful candidate is fluent in functionality on various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They demonstrate a nuanced knowledge of the broader communication and marketing landscape and draw on best practices to create and execute innovative campaign strategies, including organization-wide systems integration, CRM and excitement at the opportunity to reshape how the organization approaches problem-solving, outreach and community-building in today’s challenging environment.

Press and Media Relations

They have expanded audience development through a mix of media, consistently developing and assessing communications and media plans to ensure that activities are cutting-edge, reflect policy developments and the emerging news agenda, and captivate audiences. They possess strong media relations experience, including successful media sponsorship negotiation and pitching to local and national TV, print, and radio; a viable press roster; and the ability to train staff, board members, and partners.

Creativity, Impact, and Influence

As a senior leader, they work effectively and collaboratively with both internal and external partners, including various issue coalitions, bipartisan government officials, and corporate partners. They build persuasive narratives, bring expertise building and sustaining relationships with corporate partners, and develop powerful written materials tailored to corporate and constituent audiences.

People Management and Relationship-building

A proven collaborator, they effectively and efficiently lead both on-site and remote teams and demonstrate success mentoring and coaching intergenerational teams to perform at high levels of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and impact. They are deeply invested in the leadership and visibility development of colleagues, including emerging leaders. They model the values and mission of O&E by demonstrating a commitment to achieving equality in the workplace and foster a diverse team of professionals.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which considers years of experience, location, job category, and other factors but the range will start at $150K. O&E has a generous benefits package:

  • Competitive compensation.
  • Medical, vision, and dental covered up to 100%.
  • Paid Time Off accrues at 3 weeks per year for the first and second years in addition to 10 office holidays and sick leave.
  • 401k plan with employer match up to 5% and a 6% safe harbor contribution after one year (11% total).
  • Locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, DC.
