About the New York City Employment & Training Coalition (NYCETC)
Started in 1997 as a volunteer organization and incorporated in 2001, the New York City Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC) is a membership organization focused exclusively on workforce development in New York City. The organization currently boasts 200 members comprised of community-based organizations, community colleges, proprietary schools, and union affiliated training programs.
NYCETC serves New Yorkers with low or moderate incomes, New Yorkers with multiple barriers to employment, New Yorkers of color, and New Yorkers who have been left out of the growing economy due to systemic and historic marginalization by connecting them with opportunities and pathways. The mission of NYCETC is to ensure that every New Yorker has access to the skills, training, and education needed to thrive in the local economy, and that every business can maintain a highly skilled workforce.
Now in its 25th year NYCETC is well poised to be the Strong Voice of New York City’s workforce development community and continue to lead this space to further impact.
NYCETC’s core strengths are in its ability to provide the collective voice of a diverse and vibrant community to policy makers, philanthropy, and the public on a wide range of topics including industry intelligence and best practices.
NYCETC is a partner project of the Fund for the City of New York (FCNY). Its Board of Directors is composed of over 20 executives of NYC’s leading workforce development providers.

This vibrant and dynamic organization is looking for a creative and entrepreneurial leader who will provide the strategic vision, oversight, and leadership to drive the organization to the next level of impact. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be an extraordinary leader with experience working with a large group of constituents and will be an active listener well-versed in developing consensus around complex issues. In addition, the CEO will have direct experience in fundraising and advocacy.
The CEO will also be a critical thinker and problem solver capable of creating a long-term vision using innovative strategies. In addition, the CEO will bring a highly focused racial and social justice lens and will be a champion of and exhibit an abiding passion and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values. The CEO will have a demonstrated track record in advancing these values both internally within the organization, as well as externally in the larger community. The CEO will also support, sustain, and grow a collaborative work environment that attracts and retains a motivated, diverse, and mission-driven staff.

Passion for the Mission and Sector Expertise
The CEO will have a demonstrated passion for the mission of NYCETC and will be able to translate that commitment to furthering the organization’s goals with an eye on increased impact. The CEO will be a subject matter expert in workforce development and able to lead the organization on the future of work. With a foundation of workforce development best practices to drawn on, the CEO will be a thought leader and lead the conversation around labor market trends and sector developments. The CEO will understand the federal, state, and local landscape and how to influence constituents at various levels to advance the work of the organization and the sector of workforce development.
With a commitment and enthusiasm for embracing the diversity and inclusion within the sector, the CEO will have a pulse on what is happening in the moment as well as long-term trends that may impact NYCETC and will be dedicated to preparing the company for continued long-term success. The CEO will have a demonstrated track record in leading and facilitating conversations related to DEI initiatives both internally and externally.
External Presence and Partnership Orientation
The CEO will be an inspirational and visionary leader who will serve as the chief ambassador for NYCETC. As an informed and passionate public speaker, the CEO will represent NYCETC as a thought leader in this space and be comfortable conveying the work of the organization’s mission and priorities to a range of constituents including membership, donors, partners, Board of Directors, and staff. With an understanding of how advocacy advances the work of the organization, the CEO will develop and maintain relationships with national, state, and local political leaders, and relevant coalitions and other advocacy organizations. The CEO will be able to work with both public and private funders and will establish strong partnerships and seek opportunities to promote NYCETC and will have a fundamental understanding of successful fundraising and the development of partnerships. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO understands the importance of a robust partnership with the Board and will ensure best board practices and accountability to the Board.
Strategic Vision and Leadership
As a strategic leader the CEO, along with the Board and staff, will set and articulate a vision for the organization’s next chapter with a keen eye to understanding the future of work. The CEO will be a creative thought leader with a solid understanding of the strategies needed to advance the work of a membership-based organization from funding and advocacy to mission delivery. The next leader will be an experienced manager who engenders trust in the staff through a collaborative and empathetic management style, helps them achieve their potential, and holds them accountable to clearly defined expectations and goals.
Internal Operations and Business Acumen
The CEO is an experienced executive with staff, operational, and financial management experience. With a proven track record in strategic financial oversight and experience in overseeing various functions of an organization, the CEO will lead the organization in operational best practices. The CEO will have a keen understanding of the processes, infrastructure, and systems needed to support a growing organization. With responsibility for planning, implementing, and managing activities, the CEO will serve as a thought-leader for the team and support the creation of streamlined systems for better efficiency.
Exceptional Communication Skills
With excellent interpersonal and emotional intelligence, the CEO will build and maintain positive and productive relationships through transparent communication with internal and external audiences. An engaging speaker and writer, the CEO understands the importance of telling the compelling story of NYCETC’s mission to connect with potential partners and advance the organization’s mission. Through persuasive coalition building, the CEO will be confident and comfortable building partnerships and crafting a captivating message of support to advance the impact of the NYCETC and the sector of workforce development.
In addition, strong candidates will offer:
- Strong commitment to NYCETC’s mission, values, and strategic plan, with experience in economic development, workforce development, education, training and/or social services
- Understanding in how to leverage a membership association including but not limited to developing mechanisms to gather feedback and suggestions from membership and cultivating new members
- Fundraising, development, and other revenue-generating strategies, including support from individual donors, foundations, governments, and corporations to consistently support current and new initiatives
- Direction and oversight to development of a set of advocacy priorities based on member needs and priorities
- Articulate and promote the advocacy agenda in social media, traditional media, government, and elected officials
- Ability to use labor market data and understanding of working with different sectors of employment
- Understanding and respect for populations with diverse cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds either through lived or professional experience
- Dedication to building a workplace centered in equity with demonstrated appreciation for driving conversations around race, class, gender, and other aspects of identity
- Experience in event planning
- Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience
- Will be a strong communicator and able to persuasively inspire through different mediums
- Strong written and public-speaking communications skills
- A Bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree in a related field preferred
- Knowledge of City, State and Federal workforce legislative and regulatory policy and process
- Knowledge of the NYC workforce system and its various stakeholders preferred
Compensation & Benefits
NYCETC is targeting a salary range of $150,000 – $175,000.
NYCETC offers a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, 20 vacation days per year, 15 sick days per year, 12 paid holidays per year, contributions to individuals’ 401K plans and TransitChek option.
