Grant Cooper, a healthcare executive search firm, is seeking a Medical Director for Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center in Huntington, WV.The Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center is jointly directed and located on the campus of Cabell Huntington Hospital and the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The three-story, 70,000 square-foot facility opened in January 2006. Within the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center is the James F. Edwards Adult Cancer Clinic, which includes an adult oncology center with infusion stations, exam rooms, consultation rooms, minor procedure rooms, a diagnostic breast center and physician offices, and the Joan C. Edwards Children’s Cancer Clinic, which includes the children’s oncology/hematology treatment center with infusion stations, pediatric oncology clinics and physician offices. The Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center includes a robust clinical trial and research program.

Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine is a state-supported, community-based medical school established in 1977. The faculty and administration are committed to providing high-quality medical education and residency training. Clinical and basic research is focused on health issues related to rural populations, including obesity-related health disparities and addiction. The school’s faculty practice plan, Marshall Health, employs approximately 1150 individuals including physicians, residents, clinical, administrative and research staff with upwards of 25 clinic locations and three multi-disciplinary facilities. The Division of Hematology/Oncology includes an active fellowship program.

Cabell Huntington Hospital is a 303-bed, Level II Trauma facility with a burn intensive care unit, and Level III NICU. Cabell Huntington cares for patients from more than 29 counties throughout West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio. Opened in 1956, it is also the primary teaching facility for the Marshall University Schools of Medicine and Nursing.

Positon Overview

The Medical Director of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center will lead strategic planning and program development across all facets of cancer care service delivery, fostering a focus on academic growth and research development. This position will serve as the primary clinical spokesperson for the cancer center, overseeing the development of standards of practice and clinical protocols which allow for the monitoring of clinical, operational and patient safety.


  • Board certification in an oncologic specialty and eligibility for licensure in the State of West Virginia. Credentials to be appointed at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
  • Prior leadership position such as a Cancer Center Director, Division Chief, or Medical Director in an academic medical center, fully integrated oncology program, or leadership experience within a NCI designated cancer center.
  • Expertise in establishing physician relationships combined with the ability to manage an interdisciplinary team while appreciating and fostering collegial and peer participation from all disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience with operating budgets and an understanding of the challenges facing academic medicine.
  • Record of scholarly activity with proven leadership, mentoring, and administrative abilities. A background in clinical growth, program development, and cancer center leadership is highly desired.
