About Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers

Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL) is a Massachusetts nonprofit organization based in Boston, MA. It operates under the auspices of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) which funds the LCL operation from an allocation of annual lawyer licensing fees.

The mission of LCL is to support the wellbeing of the legal community in the Commonwealth by providing free and confidential consultations in the areas of substance abuse, mental health, and practice management through the Law Office Management Assistance Program (LOMAP).  These efforts are supported by four credentialed clinicians on the mental health and substance abuse side of the agency and four program advisors dealing with practice management issues.

LCL and LOMAP provide multiple peer support groups as well as educational seminars in locations throughout the state as well as online. In non-pandemic times, clinicians offer face-to-face consultations as well as confidential telephone sessions throughout the state. Currently, these sessions are conducted primarily on Zoom and when necessary, individuals are referred to LCL’s network of independent practitioners. LCL works with lawyers who are the subject of bar discipline or, are at risk of bar discipline, often referred by the Board of Bar Overseers (BBO). The professionals at LOMAP tend to get involved with the legal community where issues of ethics, client fund management, technology and /or succession planning are raised. Whether working with Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE), state-wide law schools, the BBO (Practicing with Professionalism) or building unique programs to fit the needs of the times, LOMAP is available to provide support and direction to establishing and operating a law practice.

Opportunities and Challenges

With a renewed focus on Health and Wellness from the BBO, the next Executive Director of LCL is uniquely positioned to lead the organization out of Covid-19 and into the future.

  • Expand the reach of the organization across the Commonwealth.
  • Enhance and increase collaboration with the SJC and other stakeholders through consistent outreach, messaging, and advocacy.
  • Examine the role of LOMAP and look for ways to raise the profile of that program as aligned with but separate from the clinical piece of LCL.
  • Look at the organizational structure of the organization and identify ways to enhance the current model.
  • Work with Bar stakeholders to develop and implement additional plans and services for the wellbeing of the legal community within the Commonwealth.
  • In collaboration with the Board, identify ways to better brand LCL and promote its’ mission and breadth of services beyond the founding mission of helping lawyers struggling with issues of substance abuse.
Role Summary

Working with and reporting to the Board of Directors the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the strategic direction, daily operation, and management of the staff of both LCL and LOMAP. In addition, the Executive Director represents and participates with key stakeholders at various agencies and Committees of the Supreme Judicial Court (SJC), including the SJC Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being, the BBO, and the Standing Advisory Committee on Professionalism.

Primary Responsibilities

The Executive Director:

  • Provides management and oversight of LCL/LOMAP’s three main service areas: mental health, recovery, and practice management.
  • Actively participates in professional committees at the local, state, and national level.
  • Is responsible for the financial management and oversight of annual $1.8 mil budget, including periodic reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Monitors monthly cash flow.
  • Prepares the LCL Annual Report.
  • Meets with other COLAPS around the country to identify and implement appropriate best practices.
  • Reports to the Board of Directors on activities, progress, and financials of the institution.
  • Ensures compliance with related Federal and State regulations applicable to a 501C-3 organization including but not limited to employment, human rights, OSHA, charities, and taxation.
  • JD admitted to the Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing professionals in a related environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and empathy in dealing with issues related to sobriety and the stress of a professional’s responsibilities.
