The Fund for Women’s Equality (FFWE) and ERA Coalition (ERA) are sister organizations. FFWE is a 501(c)(3) organization working to increase public understanding of the need for comprehensive, fair, and equal treatment of women and girls under the law and the need to end gender inequality in all its forms. ERA is a 501(c)(4) organization working for the passage and ratification of an Equal Rights Amendment to ensure constitutional equality for all.

Together these organizations lead a powerful coalition that is creating a strong, multigenerational, intersectional, and inclusive forum for all voices.

About the ERA Coalition

Our goal is to amend the Constitution to ensure that one cannot be discriminated against because of one’s sex.

Founded in 2014, the ERA Coalition is comprised of some 200 national and local partner and supporter organizations across the country representing millions of advocates working for the equality of all. We strategize with states seeking ratification. We work with legislators on efforts to remove the time limit for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, and we work with the Attorneys-General of Virginia, Illinois, and Nevada to support their litigation seeking recognition of the ERA as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution. Our team of legal scholars has provided extensive research and strategic advice to move the campaign forward for recognition of the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution.

There has been extraordinary progress in the movement toward constitutional equality. The ERA would add a provision to our Constitution saying that “[e]quality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex.”

While this effort was launched in 1923 by Alice Paul, the ERA wasn’t passed by Congress until 1972.  At that time, there was broad, bipartisan support, including from the Republican Party and President Nixon. The amendment then went to the states for ratification. By the late 1970s, even after the extension of the seven-year time limit, the legislatures of only 35 states had ratified it—three short of the 38 required for a constitutional amendment.

Now, decades later, the ERA is surging forward again. As the Coalition’s work has scaled in recent years, the ERA has risen in the public discourse. Nevada ratified the ERA in 2017 – the first state in 40 years to do so, capturing public attention in the process. Illinois followed suit and ratified the ERA in 2018. Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the ERA on January 27th, 2020.

The House voted to remove the congressional time limit on the ERA on March 17, 2021. The time limit is not a requirement for amendments to the constitution but had been in the preamble to the 1972 bill. Looking ahead, the Senate is next to retroactively remove the time limit.

About the Fund for Women’s Equality

FFWE is a national organization that promotes public awareness of the need for constitutional equality in the United States. We seek bold change and are helping lead a community and political movement for recognition of the ERA. The Opportunity

As the Coalition enters its next chapter of ambitious growth, the next President and CEO (CEO) will provide leadership and direction to fulfill the organization’s mission. Vision and strategy developed collaboratively with the Board and coalition partners will be major priorities for this CEO. You will focus on fundraising, operational effectiveness, and core mission delivery.

You will serve as a thought leader in the equal rights movement, promoting the core concepts of gender equality and social justice. Your vision for the future will lead the Coalition into its next chapter, inspiring broad support and engagement from current and prospective donors, partners, and constituents.

Internally, you will support and guide the staff of 5 by leading with a mission focus and ensure that the team feels continually inspired by the work. As CEO, you will also direct and coordinate the unified efforts of the Coalition’s partner organizations. Moreover, as the Coalition grows, you will work to attract talent to the organizations and guide organizational growth, putting in place and/or enhancing the systems needed to ensure the effective function of the organizations.

Ultimately, you will be instrumental in helping to achieve the Coalition’s aspirations for the ERA & FFWE.

Key metrics for success of this role include:

  • Elevating awareness of and support for the ERA & FFWE, as well as engagement with the Coalition;
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with media contacts to position the Coalition as the “go-to” source for gender equality data and expert media commentary on gender discrimination;
  • Growing a multi-generational, inclusive movement of supporters who understand why the ERA & FFWE is essential to guaranteeing equal rights for all and who have the tools, resources, and support necessary to take action;
  • Achieving revenue goals and strong fundraising success for the Coalition by increasing major donors, partners, and key stakeholders;
  • Developing a comprehensive case for support that connects with people’s heads and hearts;
  • Building out the Strategic Plan and developing the team/Coalition to meet the challenges of the time;
  • Utilizing revenue growth to improve and expand innovative strategy and reach;
  • Partnering with and providing professional leadership to the Board of Directors to assure the development of an effective and motivated Board, including identification, recruitment, and stewardship; and
  • Instilling a culture of high performance at all levels by serving as a coach and mentor, cultivating community through a motivational style, and building an effective organization that can deliver.
Candidate Profile

While no candidate will bring every qualification desired, the details provided below are representative of the attributes, knowledge, and experience the Coalition is seeking for this important hire.

A Movement Leader and Visionary

You will be a strategic leader who, with the Board, will set and articulate a vision for the organization’s next chapter. You will take a collaborative, intersectional approach to evolve the vision of the Coalition for the future while celebrating the recent years of positive impact. The ability to think entrepreneurially and inject new ideas into the strategy will be critical for the Coalition to reach its full potential. You will have demonstrated the ability to provide refreshed strategic leadership to organizations, being creative and innovative yet fiscally responsible. You will instinctively ‘get ahead of the curve’ by anticipating needs and threats, and craft a strategy to address those while achieving the Coalition’s mission. Fundamentally, you will be capable of pulling the strategic levers to drive the organization with the right focus in the right areas. You will be skilled at listening to and learning from, others, understanding nuanced perspectives, and providing opportunities for varied constituents to engage in the work in ways that are meaningful to them. You will bring the ability to strengthen the Coalition and the movement by leveraging the expertise of others and fostering high levels of trust, with an eye towards enhancing collective ownership of the campaign and its strategies and plans.

Expertise in Media Relations and Development

As an external voice of the organization, you will articulate and broaden the vision to the Coalition’s supporting community and future stakeholders. You will bring a strong understanding of how to leverage social media and public relations for a movement organization. You will build strong awareness, engagement, establish partnerships and seek opportunities to promote the Coalition’s work. You will inspire, broaden, and deepen support from donors, elected officials, high-profile leaders, grassroots partners, and other key stakeholders. You will have a demonstrated record of successful fundraising initiatives, including identification, cultivation, and stewardship and working in close partnership with the team and Boards of Directors to collaboratively achieve fundraising goals. You will have a strong data and analysis orientation and a proven ability to use metrics to drive development decisions and achieve strategic objectives.

An Action-Oriented Leader with Strong Execution Skills

You will have the ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability and allocate resources to ensure results.  You will strengthen and retain an empowered team that will work with you to implement the course of action for achieving the vision. You will be an effective “big picture” strategist who attacks new ideas with drive and energy and is comfortable in an environment of rapid change and growth. An engaging and supportive leader, you will have a track record of motivating and inspiring others to achieve impact. You will have the character and confidence to work comfortably in a highly visible role and to work effectively with a broad range of constituents, both within the Coalition and externally. You will be a strong and decisive leader, making decisions on a fact/analytical basis with fair consideration of others views.

Passion for the Coalition’s Mission and Vision

You will have a deep passion for the mission and values of the Coalition, which center racial justice, with a focus on discrimination and resistance, covering intersectional issues impacting women, including transwomen and other members of the LGBTQ+ community. On the most fundamental level, you will be a proactive advocate for equal rights. You will embrace the vibrancy and diversity within the movement, which is integral to gaining credibility with the staff, Board, and partners. In addition, your eye will consistently focus on the future and how to best adapt the Coalition to a rapidly changing political and social climate. You will have an unwavering spirit and will be an empathic leader who treats others with respect. Most importantly, you will be an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics, and values; someone who can be trusted without reservation.

Additional Experience

Candidates with legal expertise and/or a JD are welcome. Strong candidates will also bring experience working with interconnected 501c3 and 501c4 organizations.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for the President and CEO position is $150,000 – $175,000. This is a full-time exempt position.
