Grant Cooper is seeking a Chief for the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine.Vidant Health, clinical partner to the East Carolina Brody School of Medicine, will open the new Vidant Cancer Center in March 2018. The Vidant Cancer Center is a $180 million state-of-the-art facility with 96 beds, 60 clinic rooms, 5 linear accelerators, and 60 infusion bays within a 500,000 square foot freestanding cancer tower. The Division of Hematology and Oncology at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine includes 12 active physician and research faculty members, with four fellows per year, and an active clinical trials staff and research agenda. The Brody School of Medicine has 11 clinical academic departments with eight basic science academic departments. Vidant Health is an eight-hospital system, with 1,500 licensed beds, anchored by flagship facility Vidant Regional Medical Center with over 900-beds, training 360 residents and fellows in nearly 30 specialties.  With approximately $1.65B in total operating revenue, Vidant Health is a sole provider health system covering a 29-county service area for more than 1.5 million people in eastern North Carolina.

Position Overview

The Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology will be an Endowed Professorship, and will lead growth and development of the Division, centered around the new Vidant Cancer Center. This position will play a pivotal role in the enhanced development of oncology services and clinical trials across Vidant Health, the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, and throughout northeastern North Carolina. The Chief of the Division Hematology and Oncology will be responsible for the academic, clinical, and fiscal management of the Division. This role will report to the Chair of Medicine, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine and the Executive Director of Vidant Cancer Care.


  • MD or equivalent degree.
  • Board Certification in Medical Oncology, with preference to clinical areas of interest in thoracic, breast, or GI.
  • Credentials to be appointed at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to advance and develop a superior clinical service across a multidisciplinary cancer center.
  • Expertise in establishing physician relationships combined with the ability to manage an interdisciplinary team while appreciating and fostering collegial and peer participation from all disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience with operating budgets and an understanding of the challenges facing academic medicine.
  • Record of scholarly activity with proven leadership, mentoring, and administrative abilities. A background in clinical growth, program development, and cancer center leadership is highly desired.
