Grant Cooper, a healthcare executive search firm, is seeking a Director of Physician Compensation for Rush University Medical Center.Located one mile west of Chicago’s downtown, Rush University Medical Center includes Rush University Hospital, Rush University and the Rush University Medical Group. The hospital is licensed to operate 713 beds – of which 679 currently are staffed – and includes the Johnston R. Bowman Health Center, a rehabilitation and psychiatric facility, and Rush University Children’s Hospital.

According to COMPdata, the Medical Center is the third largest hospital provider in the eight-county Chicago metropolitan area, as measured by market share. Rush is proud to have more than 11,000 employees and 1,800 physicians (including both Rush employees and doctors with private practices located at Rush).

Rush-Copley Medical Center is a 210-bed hospital providing health and wellness services to the greater Fox Valley community. Nearly 500 physicians and 2,000 clinical and professional staff members provide advanced medicine and extraordinary care to patients. Culminating a 30-year affiliation, Rush-Copley fully integrated with Rush University Medical Center in March 2017.

In 1997, Rush Oak Park Hospital partnered with Rush University Medical Center. In 2013, Rush University Medical Center acquired the hospital outright, solidifying its continued investment in community health care. With 95 beds, Rush Oak Park Hospital offers the same high standards of care as Rush University Medical Center, and many specialists practice at both hospitals. The partnership provides patients with collaborative care at the highest level.

Position Overview

The Director of Physician Compensation will be responsible for the design and administration of all physician compensation programs at Rush. S/he will direct activities and monitor workflows involving Rush’s physician compensation programs including, but not limited to, compensation analysis and development of new physician compensation arrangements. The successful candidate will document fair market value and commercial reasonableness, develop compensation plans and incentives, administer faculty contracts and associated reporting, and monitor industry trends involving physician compensation. Additionally, the person in this role will ensure physician compensation models are effective, well understood and compliant with all state and federal regulatory requirements. The Director of Physician Compensation will be expected to exemplify the Rush mission, vision and values, and act in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Accounting, Business, Economics, Health Administration, Math, Statistics or related fields required.
  • Master’s in Business, Health Administration, related discipline or CPA preferred.
  • Experience in a large, multi-specialty physician group or academic medical center is desired.
  • Five to seven years of experience administering physician and other provider compensation plans.
  • Two to three years of management experience involving oversight of staff, budgets, and physician compensation administration preferred.
