It is the umbrella organization for a robust portfolio of health insurance, wellness, worker’s compensation, and disability programs. In just over a decade, Insurance Services has grown from 300,000 to more than 2.8 million members and over $5 billion in revenue. The division provides health plans to approximately 9,000 employers, their employees and dependents, to individual members, as well as to those eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Maintaining double digit growth year over year, Insurance Services is a key growth engine of UPMC.

Position Overview

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) role is intended for an innovative and visionary physician executive who will serve as a key thought partner and advisor to the President and CEO of the Insurance Services Division and will participate as a key member of the Executive Management team contributing to the development of the division’s vision and strategy. S/he will maintain full responsibility and accountability for the integration and oversight of medical management and health care services departments and is responsible for the development and oversight of policies and procedures, clinical quality, accreditation, and physician network relations. The CMO will also play an external facing role for Insurance Services and will develop and maintain constructive relationships with UPMC health system leaders, academic physicians, hospitals, community physicians, and related networks. S/he will raise the visibility of UPMC Insurance Services Division companies in the community and within the healthcare industry at large. Additionally, the CMO will be accountable for ensuring that members/customers receive exceptional service and that clinical outcomes meet or exceed standards. S/he will build positive relationships with key customers and will seek client and consumer feedback to continually drive innovation in the health plan’s products, tools, and services.


  • MD or DO with active board certification. MBA, MPH, or MMM highly desired.
  • Minimum of eight years of progressive administrative experience in a large, progressive health plan or managed care setting.
  • Leadership background serving as a member of a Senior Management Team.
  • Leadership experience in a large medical group, academic medical center, or integrated delivery system.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical practice experience.
