Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) was incorporated on May 1, 1998 when the Harvard Medical School (HMS) physician faculties then associated with Beth Israel Hospital and New England Deaconess Hospital merged into a single faculty practice plan. HMFP is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation governed by a Board of Directors. HMFP was previously a member of CareGroup and employed more than 600 HMS faculty. Initially the purpose was to protect and enhance operating revenues and build the capital reserve needed to assure the viability of all departments in pursuing their clinical, research and teaching missions. HMFP further promoted the alignment of financial incentives, better market staying power, referral enhancements, a common forum for assessment of business development and teaching programs, reduced administrative costs, and coordination of financial planning.

Position Overview

The CEO of HMFP reports to the HMFP Board of Directors, consisting of the 13 Department Chairs, six additional physician representatives, and four community representatives. The CEO heads a management team consisting of Chief Financial, Operating, and Legal Officers, as well as Directors of Human Resources and Compliance.  Together they manage an annual budget of over $200 million. In addition, the CEO of HMFP serves as the president of the physician LLC, representing the interests of both academic and community physicians in all contract negotiations. The CEO of HMFP is responsible for successfully managing relationships between the 13 Departments, and represent their interests in negotiation with the BIDMC CEO and other officers. The CEO must possess an expansive vision of the current healthcare environment, modern academic medical practice and its relationships with a leading academic medical center and medical school while creating and implementing community opportunities with physicians and affiliate provider organizations. The CEO provides leadership and operational oversight for the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians and is responsible for all facets of medical group operations and its partnership with the community, including strategic planning, business development, physician recruitment and management, clinical operations, patient relations, clinical quality, patient care and safety, marketing and financial performance.


  • Board certified MD required; successful graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of an accredited residency program.
  • MBA or similar management degree preferred.
  • Proven physician executive with a minimum of ten years’ clinical practice, ten years’ executive leadership in a multispecialty group practice or integrated delivery system.
  • The CEO must have a range of skills, including an in depth knowledge of and personal experience with clinical practice and academic research and teaching activities.
  • Experience working with physicians from diverse backgrounds and perspectives in acute, ambulatory, chronic and preventive care environments.
