Grant Cooper, a healthcare executive search firm, is seeking a Chief of CHI Franciscan Health's Central Region in Tacoma, WA.CHI Franciscan Health is a nonprofit health system based in Tacoma, Washington with a team of nearly 12,000 doctors, nurses and staff that provide expert, compassionate medical care at eight acute care hospitals and approximately 200 primary and specialty care clinics in Pierce, King and Kitsap counties. This includes St. Anthony Hospital, Gig Harbor; St. Clare Hospital, Lakewood; St. Elizabeth Hospital, Enumclaw; St. Francis Hospital, Federal Way; St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma; Harrison Medical Center, Bremerton and Silverdale; Highline Medical Center, Burien; and Regional Hospital, Burien. The system spans more than 1,100 acute care beds, a credentialed medical staff of more than 1,500 including more than 600 employed physicians providing specialties in cardiovascular care, cancer care, orthopedics and sports medicine, neurosciences and women’s care. CHI Franciscan’s mission focuses on creating healthier communities, including caring for the poor and underserved. In 2015, the organization provided $141 million in community benefit, including $10 million in charity care.

This is a transformative time for CHI Franciscan, which is pioneering the way health care is delivered through its leading systems of care covering more than 8,000 square miles and more than 2 million residents of the Pacific Northwest. CHI Franciscan recently announced its planned $540 million development of a state-of-the-art hospital in Silverdale and expansion of its St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, as well as several innovative physician alignment relationships such as that with The Doctors Clinic in Kitsap County that grew it’s aligned and employed physician ranks to more than 1,100 physicians and providers in the region. In summer 2016, it also launched its new partnership venture with CityMD, the leading urgent care provider in the New York metro area, and opened the first urgent care center of its kind in Seattle, with many more planned regionally.

Position Overview

The Chief of CHI Franciscan Health’s Central Region is accountable for the clinical, administrative and operational components of the Pierce County market. S/he leads performance improvement, resource management, and quality related activities of the 250 providers and 700 staff members. A major objective of this Chief of the Central Region is to formulate standards of care and ensuring the highest levels of clinical quality and outcomes. As part of the senior leadership team, the Chief participates in providing strategic direction, ongoing growth and development, and facilitates communication throughout the group to ensure positive results. The Chief of the Central Region is responsible for all Surgical specialties and Women’s Health.

The Chief of the Central Region will be accountable for the clinical, administrative and operational components of the Department of Surgery including Women’s Health in collaboration with the dyad partners, the Vice President(s) of Clinic Operations. All clinical and administration staff within the Physician Enterprise will report to this position and the Vice President(s) of Clinic Operations.

In addition, the candidate should be an experienced clinical leader with demonstrable ability to guide clinicians to achieve outstanding patient-centric care. This position requires a significant amount of operational knowledge. Candidates should be familiar with all of the operational components of ambulatory care and clinic practice management.


  • MD or DO degree, preferably ten years in clinical practice.
  • Board certification in a clinical specialty.
  • Preferably five years of senior medical group management and leadership.
  • Significant leadership or management training is desirable.
  • Management certification qualification (e.g. MMM, MHA, MBA, MPH) are desirable.
