Position Overview

The Chair of Orthopaedics is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the Department and is responsible for the entirety of the clinical, educational, research, and medical staff activities of the Department. The Chair will lead interdepartmental collaborative efforts that drive performance toward the organizational goals and priorities. The Chair will be responsible for achieving institutional objectives related to staff development, financial performance, regulatory compliance, marketing, and public relations. Additionally, s/he will be responsible for the research program of the Department and will adhere to all research policies of Erlanger Health System (EHS) and the University of Tennessee.


  • M.D. or D.O. degree with Board Certification in Orthopaedic Surgery. Subspecialty boards are a plus.
  • Eligible for permanent, unrestricted licensure in Tennessee.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a substantial academic leadership role.
  • Knowledge of and experience with LCME, ACGME, and ACCME requirements.
  • Prior leadership experience such as Division Chief or Vice Chair at an institution with a significant clinical portfolio and robust Graduate Medical Education program.
  • Accomplished academic record sufficient to fulfill the University of Tennessee criteria for faculty appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level.
  • Successful track record in recruiting, mentoring and teaching exemplary team members.
  • Demonstration of professional competence and ethical standards that allow the Chair to serve as a role model for other faculty, fellows, resident physicians, and other system staff.
