Grant Cooper is seeking a Chair for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine at Chattanooga.The University of Tennessee College of Medicine (UTCOM) is a four-campus system with campus locations in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Nashville. The College of Medicine at Chattanooga (COMC), led by Dean R. Bruce Shack, MD, includes Departments of Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Surgery, and Urology. Each of these departments is headed by a chair and each sponsor a residency program. Educational, research, and patient care programs of the Chattanooga campus are centered at the affiliate hospital, Erlanger Health System (EHS) and its component units. A mutually beneficial Affiliation Agreement governs the relationship between the COMC and EHS.

Position Overview

The Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the College of Medicine Chattanooga (COMC) will be responsible for maintaining a fully accredited residency program in Family Medicine, supporting patient care programs and activities in conjunction with department faculty, developing the skills of department faculty, and providing appropriate resources to support and advance the department’s education and research programs. The Chair will be responsible for the research program of the department and will adhere to all research policies of Erlanger Health System (EHS) and the University of Tennessee. This position is responsible for achieving institutional objectives related to staff development, financial performance, regulatory compliance, marketing, and public relations.

The Chair is the chief executive and academic officer of the Department and is responsible for the entirety of the educational (undergraduate, graduate and continuing), research, public service and patient care programs of the Department. The chair will be a geographic part-time faculty member at the Chattanooga campus. All faculty in the Department report to the Chair in their roles as faculty members and the Chair reports to the Dean of the COMC.


  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certified in Family Medicine.
  • Eligible for permanent, unrestricted licensure in Tennessee.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a substantial academic leadership role.
  • Knowledge of and experience with LCME, ACGME, and ACCME requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in fiscal management, developing clinical practice plans, engagement in scholarly activities, communications, fundraising and development, and fostering collaborative working relationships with colleagues and community partners.
  • Accomplished academic record sufficient to fulfill the University of Tennessee criteria for faculty appointment at the appropriate level.
