University of Mississippi Medical Center | Chair Department Pathology | Jackson, MSThe University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), located in Jackson, is the state’s only academic health science center. UMMC encompasses six health science schools: medicine, nursing, dentistry, health related professions, graduate studies, and pharmacy. With over 9,600 full- and part-time employees, including more than 630 physicians, UMMC is one of the largest employers in Mississippi. The Medical Center’s $1.6 billion annual budget – approximately one-tenth from state appropriations – represents 10 percent of the Jackson metro area economy and 2 percent of the state economy.

The School of Medicine strives to offer an excellent, comprehensive and interrelated program of medical education, biomedical research and health care. The ultimate goal of the School is to provide quality and equitable health care to all citizens of Mississippi, the region and nation. The School of Medicine enrolls approximately 145 students per class and has gradually been increasing enrollment for the last five years to meet the state’s growing need for physicians. When a new, $74 million medical school building is completed in 2017, enrollment per class will further increase to 165 students.

Position Overview

The Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center provides leadership and has overall responsibility for Pathology services of the Medical Center as well as teaching and research programs. The chair works closely with the leadership of the hospital, inpatient services, and clinical departments and is expected to have recognized expertise in at least one subspecialty area of Pathology. The Department is at an organizational stage of development which will provide a multitude of opportunities for a top talent future-oriented leader who will receive appropriate institutional support. Within this strategic skill set, the Chair will provide day-to-day leadership and management of all Departmental components. The Chair will monitor volume, clinical quality, operations improvements and financial performance of the Department. It is anticipated that he/she will be an active clinician and educator and will be a visible leader and mentor.


  • An MD or MD/PhD with national recognition in the field of pathology as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level.
  • Progressive administrative experience, preferably in an academic medicine center setting.
  • American Board of Pathology Certification.
  • Eligibility for a medical license in Mississippi.
