Established in 2016, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine is the realization of the decades-long effort of community leaders and other supporters to establish a medical school in the Valley to provide health care to a region that historically has been burdened by health disparities.  The mission is to improve the quality of life and health for all in the Rio Grande Valley through collaborative innovations advancing healthcare, education, and research in a model of integration and teamwork within the community.

The Department of Immunology and Microbiology is dedicated to conducting research and education in all areas of host-pathogen interaction. The Department focuses on the immunologic bases of disease, as well as infectious diseases that are commonly seen at the US-Mexican border, including emerging viral, bacterial, and parasitic illnesses such as Zika, Chagas disease, and tuberculosis. The Department also concentrates on vaccine development and other clinical and translational research foci.

Position Overview

The UTRGV School of Medicine seeks a strong academic leader who has an outstanding track record in basic and/or translational cancer immunology research to serve as the new Director of the UTRGV Institute for Cancer Immunology and Chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. The Institute will catalyze multidisciplinary research, spearhead the creation of clinical services, educational programs, and community outreach, and actively engage with clinical partners across the breadth of cancer immunology, microbiology, and prevention. This Director and Chair will play a prominent role in developing and leading an institute that will be a nationally recognized center for cancer immunology that advances excellence in research, education, and innovation while serving the community.

Reporting to the Dean of UTRGV School of Medicine, the Director and Chair will join UTRGV at an exciting time for those interested in advancing research, clinical care, and education in cancer immunology and microbiology. The Institute for Cancer Immunology and Department will be integral to UTRGV School of Medicine’s focus on conducting research that directly addresses the health care issues of the Valley and training of the next generation of physician scientists. The Director and Chair will have the freedom to create a truly innovative, collaborative and entrepreneurial environment. To achieve this, the Director and Chair will develop close cooperative relationships and leverage joint resources with UTRGV’s clinical and basic science departments in order to better facilitate inter-disciplinary immunology and microbiology research, education, and clinical care.


  • MD and/or PhD is required.
  • Significant leadership experience and demonstrated success as a manager at the Chair, Associate Director, Director or program leader level gained within an academic medical center, and/or immunology and microbiology institute, including successful experience in the recruitment, retention, and management of researchers and clinicians.
  • Strong organizational, management, financial, and budgetary skills with the ability to bring scientific leadership and organization innovation to the management of people and processes.
  • Strategic in orientation, with a positive and clear vision for the future direction of cancer immunology and microbiology research.
  • An ability to grow revenue and attract external funding from institutions and individuals; specific experience with donor fundraising a plus.
  • A strong personal track record of significant continuous funding, ideally with an NIH- funded research program, that preferably both individual grant funding as well as multi-investigator grant funding—and peer-reviewed publications.
