The Opportunity

With almost 130 years of rich history and leadership, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) has an extraordinary reputation for delivering transformational experiences for youth by providing top-quality, highly effective afterschool and summer programs for children and teens in our communities. BGCB operates 9 Clubs in neighborhoods throughout Boston and Chelsea, as well as YouthConnect. It is a priority for BGCB to be an accessible and affordable place for the young people we serve. While it costs nearly $3,200 annually to serve each member, BGCB charges $25/year for children ages 6-12 and $5/year for teens – making contributed support, which accounts for 75% of the organization’s annual revenues, a critical component to sustain our operations and ensure finances are never a barrier for our families.

Historically, the Boys & Girls Clubs movement is generally associated with in-person activities such as swimming, academic assistance, and nutritional assistance. However, due to the global pandemic, the organization has swiftly adapted to meet new challenges; examples include creating full-day learning enrichment centers to enhance remote learning when schools were closed; transforming traditionally site-based programs into virtual experiences; and utilizing existing facilities, when possible, in accordance with local and state guidelines. BGCB has a prestigious and committed Board of Directors and has built and retained an experienced and passionate management team, staff, and volunteer organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief of Development (CDO) is a highly collaborative, passionate, and visionary leader who successfully works with a dedicated team of fundraising and communications staff. Together, they collectively drive the organization’s primary revenue generation vehicles and narrate the story of BGCB. With up to four direct reports – including a Vice President of Development, the CDO role is uniquely positioned to partner with senior executive leadership and Board members to build on an exceptional philanthropic foundation, of BGCB’s past campaigns, and set the stage for continued transformational impact.   

Along with the Vice President of Development, the CDO is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising and donor relations activities that include all donor sectors for Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.  This includes principal and major gifts, annual fund, events, public and private institutional support, United Way, endowment, capital and planned giving that result in an expanded source of support to sustain the organization and it’s impact for the future.

Fundraising Leadership

  • In partnership with key Development staff:
    • Manage all aspects of the fundraising team, including responsibility of leading the development effort related to strategic planning and fundraising; raising ambitious levels of private, institutional and corporate support annually to support current operating expenses, and managing a future comprehensive capital campaign. 
    • Create donor strategies for maintaining the current donors while attracting new donors in partnership with staff and volunteer leadership.
    • Lead direct solicitations of six and seven-figure gifts and manage efforts to build a pipeline of four and five-figure gifts.
    • Work closely with the Nicholas President and CEO and Board leadership, as well as with BGCB Operations, Marketing and Communications, and Finance Staff to develop and implement fundraising strategies to meet established objectives.
      • Assist with guiding the organization’s, CEO’s and Leadership groups’ activities strategically to maximize positive exposure in media and marketing opportunities.  Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing and new donors by attending city wide events/ create opportunities to network/ forge lasting relationships for future engagement.

Strategic Management and Planning

  • Manage a 24+ member Development Team.
  • Collaborate with volunteer leadership to represent BGCB fundraising activities at the Board of Director, Trustee, Board Committee and affinity group events and meetings.
  • Spearhead the process for developing annual projections that support development of BGCB operating budget (potentially $35m in 2028) as well as monthly fundraising projections used to monitor progress.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Development Operations as well as with the Finance staff to record and reconcile monthly revenue tracking and to provide updated information on revenue projections for the CEO, Sr. Management and select Board Committees.
  • Serve as member of the CEO’s senior management team and actively contribute to long-term institutional planning.
  • Support the CEO in the implementation of fundraising priorities and initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Board Chair and members of Board Committees engaged in fundraising including Major Gifts, Champion Society, Corporate Giving (double the amount to $6m), Annual Dinner and House Party Committees, Friends Council, Artemis Circle, the Corporate Leadership Council, the Recognition and Retention Group, ad-hoc groups such as the Planned Giving and Public Funding Advisory Groups, and Governance Committee.
  • Work with Board of Directors, Trustees and Trustees Leadership Council, providing ongoing updates and analysis on all activity.
  • Provide strategic leadership as BGCB expands its engagement opportunities for donors, including corporate partnerships, affinity groups, family engagement, Alumni Councils, and activities.
  • Manage the design and implementation of fundraising plans for a future comprehensive capital campaign, of approximately $200m (including a feasibility study), other special campaigns, which may include strategic initiatives and capital projects.

  • A track record of leading capital campaigns, developing corporate partners, closing on major gifts, and raising funds annually.

  • Change agent who knows how to acknowledge the current fundraising successes but has the capacity to grow the BGCB fundraising effort defined by the developed strategic plan to take it to the next level.
  • Capacity to work together with a team to close principal and major gifts.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of development, with an ability to manage a comprehensive fundraising program, including principal and major gifts, annual giving, events, planned giving, institutional and corporate giving, and public funding.
  • Track record of collaborating with executive leadership, high profile donors and volunteers, finance, program, and marketing/communications staff to identify fundraising needs and create fundraising strategies.
  • Highly organized and results oriented.
  • Superb communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • Quick thinker who is analytical, adaptable, and enterprising in orientation.

Management and Planning

  • Excellent planning skills with the ability to manage and implement short and long-term goals; exceptional strategic fundraising manager with a track record of getting the job done and creating impact.
  • Demonstrated success in managing across institutional constituencies to advance fundraising priorities.
  • Bridge builder with a knowledge of all communities that are served with an ability to collaborate with all constituents.
  • Strong budget management and reporting skills.
  • A minimum of 15 years of managing development staff.
