
Furman University, a top private liberal arts university, seeks nominations and applications for the position of University Controller, the principal accounting, tax, and financial reporting officer of the University. The next University Controller will serve as a strategic business partner to the AVP for Finance, Human Resources, and the VP for Finance and Administration at a time of strength and stability at Furman. The University Controller serves as a vital partner across campus and supports various committees and working groups at Furman, the Audit Committee of the Board, and other external constituents.
The University Controller is an integral part of Furman University’s Finance & Administration division providing leadership for all the accounting functions of the University. The University Controller directs financial audits, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, and provides strong leadership and management skills, and oversees and supervises a team of seven in the accounting department. The University Controller formulates and implements policies and controls to ensure the stewardship of assets and works collaboratively with senior leadership and campus customers to provide core business services vital to accomplishing the University’s mission and goals. The University Controller has five direct reports including the Bursar, Fiscal Operations Specialist, Accounting Manager, Payroll Manager, and a Senior/Grant Accountant.
Qualified applicants will have a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in accounting with progressively responsible management and leadership experience that includes accounting, management, supervision, and oversight of complex accounting systems. A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification is required for the position. Higher education industry knowledge and knowledge of the principles and techniques in higher education, nonprofit, and/or governmental financial management practices and standards is a plus. Strong candidates will offer audit leadership experience and proficiency using Workday.
