The Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's & Neurodegenerative Diseases (Biggs Institute) at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM) seeks a board-certified or board eligible psychiatrist to serve as Director, Geriatric Psychiatry at the Associate Professor or Professor rank, with a cross-appointment in a suitable department. This is typically the department of Psychiatry but could be Neurology, Population Health Sciences, Molecular Genetics, or other clinical or basic science departments. The role will involve leading a clinical practice and growing a division of geriatric psychiatry but also offers protected time and collaborative opportunities for research, teaching, mentoring and local and national advocacy and leadership. This position offers mentoring and resources to support rapid career advancement in the clinician-scientist, clinician-educator or leadership tracks.
The Biggs Institute was designated in 2021 as an NIA-funded South Texas ADRC (Alzheimer's Disease Research Center) in partnership with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Institute has strong institutional and community support as well as substantial philanthropic and NIH funding. Led by founding Director, Dr. Sudha Seshadri, the Biggs Institute is a flagship institute within UTHSA with the mission of establishing an interdisciplinary, integrated program to provide comprehensive clinical care and undertake innovative and important research into the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, including vascular contributions to dementia, Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia, chronic traumatic encephalopathy and frontotemporal dementia. By 2025, the Biggs Institute and Department of Neurology will be moving to an integrated 5-story Center for Brain Health that will house clinical space, clinical research facilities, and faculty offices.
We are seeking an empathic and engaged clinician who can lead the geriatric neuropsychiatry core within the Biggs Institute, be an enthusiastic educator to patients, their families, and providers, and a generous mentor and team member. The selected psychiatrist will be supported with adequate resources and a multidisciplinary team to provide superb clinical care to a large, diverse patient population drawn from a referral base across South and West Texas. A psychiatrist with subspecialty training or clinical experience in caring for persons with memory disorders and their care partners, and who can manage the range of mood and behavioral disturbances seen in these persons in collaboration with neurologists, geriatricians, and primary care providers, and a multidisciplinary team would be ideal.
This is an ideal opportunity for a physician interested in combining creative, comprehensive, compassionate clinical care for a broad range of memory and cognitive disorders, as part of a multi-disciplinary team including neurologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, social workers, geriatricians, palliative/supportive care, sleep medicine, occupational therapy, psychotherapists, counselors, and care managers. Physicians with experience caring for persons with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias, experience conducting clinical trials (as PI or site PI), or interested in studying mild behavioral impairment are welcome.
