Established in 2016, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine is the realization of the decades-long effort of community leaders and other supporters to establish a medical school in the Valley to provide health care to a region that historically has been burdened by health disparities. The mission is to improve the quality of life and health for all in the Rio Grande Valley through collaborative innovations advancing healthcare, education, and research in a model of integration and teamwork within the community.
The UTRGV School of Medicine welcomed its charter class of 55 medical students in the summer of 2016. The UTRGV School of Medicine now has more than 100 medical students and more than 130 medical residents and fellows training in 16 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs throughout the Valley, with more training programs on the horizon. The UTRGV School of Medicine is comprised of 114 faculty in the following departments: Family and Preventative Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry and Neurology, Surgery, Pediatrics, Medical Education, Biomedical Sciences, Population Health and Biostatistics, Human Genetics, Neurosciences, Immunology and Microbiology, and the South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute.
Position Overview
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships. The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships is a key member of the education leadership team. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships is responsible for leading curricular activities that reflect the vision, values and mission of the UTRGV SOM. The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships collaborates closely with the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Pre-clerkships to structure the horizontal and vertical integration of the overall UME curriculum. Together they work to promote student success by ensuring all medical students achieve the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become competent, compassionate physician leaders.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will preferably have the following competencies, knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes:
- MD or DO from an accredited university.
- Ability to obtain Texas Medical License and current Board Certification.
- Four (4) years of leadership experience as an Assistant Dean, Clerkship Director or Clinical Course Director in undergraduate medical education.
- Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal skills.
- Strong planning, organizational and managerial skills.
- Effective team building and team-based collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of current national initiatives and innovations in medical education.
- Knowledge of contemporary medical pedagogy in medical education.
- Experience in curriculum design, assessment and evaluation with a focus on improving measurable student outcomes.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion and an understanding of accreditation requirement in medical education.
- Ability to design and work within complex systems.
