The University of Nebraska Medical Center and College of Medicine, in partnership with Grant Cooper, a Diversified Search Group company, is announcing a national search for the Chair, Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology. The Chair will oversee and direct the planning, implementation and management of education and research programs of excellence consistent with the vision and mission of the College of Medicine as established by the Dean and the Chancellor of UNMC. In addition, this individual will provide leadership and direction in the conception, development, and execution of objectives, policies, plans, and programs pertinent to the successful operation of the Department.
The Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology is one of five basic science departments of the College of Medicine, with a mission to excel in research, teaching, service, and mentoring. Housed in the state-of-the-art Durham Research Center, the department has earned a national and international reputation for its research excellence and is a critical component of several education programs on campus. Currently, the department has 11 faculty with primary appointments, and 17 courtesy faculty members whose primary appointments are in other basic science or clinical departments. Ongoing research in the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology encompasses a variety of fields, including cardiovascular, neural, and renal physiology and pathophysiology. Specific areas of interest include cellular and molecular cardiac physiology, diabetic cardiomyopathy, heart failure, vascular function and dysfunction, redox signaling in hypertension, autonomic physiology and neuromodulation, neural control of circulation, renal ion transport, control of volume homeostasis, and mechanisms of renal injury & repair. Department faculty make a significant contribution to the teaching of professional and graduate students in the College of Medicine and other colleges at UNMC. The Department also hosts the Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine Doctoral Program, one of seven programs that comprise the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. In the fall of 2022, the department launched a new Master’s in Medical Physiology Program.
The Chair will report directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine.
Responsibilities
- Lead and direct the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology with overall responsibility for vision, academic planning, development, and resource management.
- Provide overall management and guidance in order to most effectively utilize the available physical, financial, and human resources.
- Ensure the highest quality of undergraduate medical, allied health sciences, and graduate education.
- Attract, recruit, and retain diverse faculty members and staff as appropriate.
- Ensure that faculty in the department receive effective, personalized mentoring.
- Conduct, support, and foster research activities and collaborations with other departments as appropriate.
- Create and maintain relationships throughout the Omaha community and beyond, including other medical and academic institutions, associations, organizations, alumni, and benefactors.
Professional Qualifications
- MD and/or PhD or equivalent degree, with the appropriate credentials to lead a basic science physiology department.
- Scholarship and research accomplishments that would merit the rank of Professor in the College of Medicine.
- Successful leadership and management experience in an academic setting.
- Recognition as a scientific leader in physiology.
- Demonstrated commitment to, and successful experience in, medical research.
- Demonstrated commitment to, and successful experience in, medical and graduate education.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting faculty is highly desirable.
- Success in mentoring and contributing to the growth and development of others.
- Business, administrative, and academic operations experience.

The base salary for this role is currently anticipated to range from $281,000 - $383,000, commensurate with experience and credentials. UNMC offers a competitive benefits package including comprehensive insurance and generous retirement plan.
