Overview of the role
The Section of General Internal Medicine at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine is seeking an innovative and inspirational faculty leader to serve as Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs in Primary Care, assuming overall leadership responsibility for primary care operations, transformation and innovation.
The Associate Chief has responsibility for Primary Care operations, transformation, and innovation. The Associate Chief will have important roles in ensuring the success of our exciting Medicaid Accountable Care Organization as well leading our primary care clinicians to continue to excel in all aspects of high value, patient-centered care. The primary care practice in the Section of General Internal Medicine is the largest ambulatory practice at Boston Medical Center, with over 70 faculty and approximately 44,000 patients. In addition, the practice has critically important specialized programs with national reputations such as Office-Based-Addiction-Treatment, Women’s Health, Refugee Health, Integrated Behavioral Health, patient navigator programs, Complex Care Management, Clinical Pharmacist Program, and TOPCARE for safe opioid prescribing.
The Associate Chief will oversee Clinical Operations and Leadership Development by creating a culture of continuous performance improvement, responsible stewardship of resources, and career development for clinical faculty. This includes supporting the Associate Medical Directors in recruiting, retaining, organizing, and managing GIM faculty in the primary care practice and providing clinical oversight and guidance, as necessary, to ensure that consistently high-quality care is provided to all patients. The Associate Chief must enable and encourage the interdisciplinary and integrated care team concept as an integral element of the provision of high quality, responsive primary care. The Associate Chief must be prepared to mentor Associate Medical Directors and other leaders to impart knowledge that enables efficient care delivery that is clinically competent and culturally sensitive and customer service oriented. The Associate Chief is responsible, in collaboration with leaders in GIM, to set and attain goals that promote clinical excellence and productivity in ways that are responsive to and respectful of patient and provider needs as well as those of other staff.
The Associate Chief will also have an important role in ensuring that the primary care practice facilitates an effective educational environment for our students, residents, and fellows. The Section of General Internal Medicine has a large and growing clinical research portfolio and the Associate Chief will oversee coordination of research activities and clinical operations, with the opportunity to participate in research studies as a co-Investigator. The Associate Chief will be expected to work collaboratively with the BMC leadership team in formulating strategic plans for the practice.

Desired Credentials & Characteristics
The right candidate will be board certified in Internal Medicine and have a track record of leadership in a primary care setting. They must have an appreciation of the challenges of an academic medical center, have demonstrated leadership in managing and improving quality, and, consistent with the national movement, guide the Primary Care program toward the Medical Home model of care and toward Accountable Care Organizations. He or she must be very effective and efficient at clinical operations.
The Associate Chief must have an excellent sense for thriving in a complex organization. They will ideally have worked in an urban environment that entails a culturally diverse work force and patient population. An important aspect of succeeding in this role is a demonstrated commitment to the mission of providing health care to an underserved population. The Associate Chief must guide new program development and implementation. As a resource and mentor to staff, they must be able to manage and lead other physicians to both quality outcomes and high productivity.
