The University of Michigan’s Department of Pathology is comprised of over 180 faculty, 119 trainees and over 1,000 non-instructional staff, a medical school expense budget exceeding $81 million, including almost $30 million in extramurally funded research, a hospital expense budget of $177 million, 250,000+ assignable square feet of space in nine buildings, and 7.3 million billable tests amounting to over $1 billion in gross revenue.
Position Overview
The Department of Pathology at Michigan Medicine is seeking a Chief Department Administrator (CDA). The CDA will partner with the Department Chair to manage departmental operations, support faculty affairs and accomplish strategic initiatives of the department that are aligned with the overall vision of Michigan Medicine. The CDA will oversee the management of the department’s financial performance, human resources, service agreements with internal and external stakeholders, research administration, space utilization, and educational administrative activities.
The CDA has additional accountability to the Medical School’s Executive Director for Administration and Chief Operating Officer for academic activities and to University of Michigan Health leadership for clinical activities.
Qualifications
- MBA, MPH or equivalent combination of education and experience required
- 5+ years of experience in academic department administration or health system operations
- 5+ years of experience in supervising/managing staff, the work of others; experience overseeing assigned work and ability to motivate team members
- Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and data analysis
- Knowledge of funds flow in a matrixed organization
