About the Des Moines Art Center
For 75 years, the Des Moines Art Center (“Art Center”) has been a leading cultural and economic asset to the Des Moines community and the Midwest. An AAM-accredited institution, the Des Moines Art Center has amassed an important collection of art from the 19th century to the present, with a major emphasis on contemporary art. Focused on quality and global in scope, it includes major works by Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Francis Bacon, Andy Goldsworthy, Henri Matisse, Wangechi Mutu, Ai Wei Wei, Giacometti, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Theaster Gates, Anselm Kiefer and Nick Cave, among hundreds of others.
The Opportunity:
The Des Moines Art Center Board of Trustees will look to the next John and Mary Pappajohn Director (“Director”) to expand the reach, relevance and impact of the Des Moines Art Center’s artistic, educational and civic contributions. The Director oversees the full scope of creative and operational duties, providing vision, direction, coherence, and leadership for all functions of the Art Center.
The Director will play an integral role in developing and implementing the next strategic plan; advancing the Art Center’s legacy as a world-class collecting institution; expanding its reach, visibility, awareness, and access; deepening audience engagement; ensuring continued fiscal and operational sustainability; and building capacity around important cultural dialogue centered around art.
