Medical Director, Inpatient Psychiatry

Position Overview
The Medical Director’s key responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement innovative approaches to inpatient service delivery, including strategies and service delivery models to promote patient access and align with facility and system-wide initiatives.
- Allow for significant clinical practice, devoting approximately 50% of time to direct patient care.
- Provide leadership for and participate in the development and execution of clinical and operational improvement initiatives for inpatient psychiatry and in collaboration with community partners.
- Responsible for tracking physician wellness and employee satisfaction and provide ongoing guidance and advice to executive leadership to promote and enhance overall employee satisfaction.
- Collaborate with other clinical leaders and content experts on program development and planning to achieve goals as well as hospital initiatives.
- Responsible for the collaborative development of facility and regulatory standards of care, standards of practice, policies, procedures, and protocols. Subsequently responsible for the performance of staff and adherence to established standards of practice, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Responsible for direct supervision and completion of ongoing impact of clinical teams and trainees across the facility; provides guidance regarding clinical issues and programming to executive clinical leadership.
- Assist in the development of the Brockton’s recruitment strategy and hiring of new faculty to align with strategic planning and backfilling of vacancies; engage in and be the primary lead for ongoing discussions with leadership regarding renegotiations of contracts, clinical mapping and clinical productivity.
- Foster the development of a work environment that is inclusive and conducive to the delivery of superior clinical care and appropriate staff retention/recruitment.
- Provide direction, motivation, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring to faculty and trainees across disciplines.
- Engage in and support education and training of Residents, the next generation of multi-disciplinary clinicians, expected to commence in July of 2023
- In a rapidly evolving healthcare environment, adapt and create new and innovative programs to serve inpatient psychiatric patients and to meet their complex needs across the continuum of care.
- Participate in institutional committees and appropriate external professional organizations and represents BMC at appropriate external meetings or organizations.
- Work to ensure the clinical strategic goals and program growth align with financial strategy and strengthens the department’s overall financial health.
- Check work of self and others against required quality standards.
- Review performance and progress on a regular basis to ensure team is achieving results.
- Test to see if goals are sufficiently challenging and implement corrective action based on deviations.
- Engage in difficult conversations if needed to ensure that the faculty and clinicians promote safe, collegial, and supportive work environment.
Desired Outcomes:
- Create a new strategic plan and novel approaches for behavioral health inpatient care to promote patient access to care which meets the operational needs and objectives of the facility, department, and larger system.
- Develop, communicate, and implement service-specific strategic initiatives and optimize workflows to streamline and continue to develop our clinical offerings to meet needs of populations across the continuum of inpatient psychiatric care and to improve access to care.
- Develop evidence-based interventions to engage specialty populations and retain them in care that has been tailored to meet their unique needs.
- Cultivate trusting relationships and transparent communication with the department faculty, staff and other clinical and administrative leaders throughout BMC.
- Serve as a trusted advisor and role model to faculty and staff.
Qualifications
Ideal Experience:
- Administrative and leadership experience, ideally at a facility, department, or system-wide level.
- Leadership and supervisory experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
- Experience in building and executing on new and innovative strategies
- Demonstrated record of driving and implementing change
- Experience driving operational excellence and data driven approaches in psychiatric services.
- Demonstrated record of achievement in creating a culture of performance improvement and accountability; experience with systems redesign approaches to drive change and optimize organizational changes; includes strategic planning, program development and patient access.
- Demonstrated excellence in education, clinical practice, and leadership skills.
- Uncommon gravitas and excellent communication skills, including verbal and written; ability to collaborate and promote engagement across all levels of the organization and adapt communication style to effectively interact with the intended audience.
- Proven track record and demonstrated ability to lead as a strategic thinker with a transformative leadership style and operate at a systems level thinking; solution/results-oriented approach and style.
- Strong emotional and social intelligence.
- Board certification in Psychiatry.
- Possess, or eligibility for, licensure in the state of Massachusetts.

- The Medical Director will serve as a facility leader and trusted advisor able to effectively communicate strategic objectives and inspire a commitment to excellence by:
- Engaging people in a dialogue to gain commitment and bring them "on board", linking their perspective to the intent.
- Resolving conflicts by discussing individual issues with each person and assist in mediation, in coordination with HR if indicated.
- Checking with both sides of a discussion to ensure a common understanding; ability to build consensus but also set clear expectations.

- The Medical Director should be an adept problem-solver and skilled operator able to identify opportunities and implement initiatives to drive consistent improvements in behavior health outpatient settings by:

- Adjusting communication style to the audience to help them understand and accept the change.
- Encouraging people to support and propose changes and ideas; focus on solution-oriented outcomes.
