The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) uses evidence-informed approaches to social justice problems in public safety systems and conducts research to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change. CPE works with law enforcement and communities to change the policies and procedures that perpetuate bias in policing and use their Data-Driven Interventions (DDI’s) to equip law enforcement and communities to address racial bias systematically. CPE also focuses on leveraging technology to analyze data on police stops, searches, arrests, and use of force to measure disparities and reveal patterns of unjust outcomes.

The Opportunity
The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is seeking a Vice President of Academic Science (VP) with a passion for executing high-quality quantitative social science to lead the growing Academic Science team. The VP will lead an interdisciplinary team of PhD-level social scientists and other contributors and will provide intellectual leadership, management, and mentoring for the CPE-Yale Research Lab under the direction of Principal Investigator (and CPE co-founder and CEO) Phillip Atiba Goff.
The ideal candidate will have deep quantitative or mixed-methods social science research experience and exceptional interpersonal and management skills. This position requires a passion for using quantitative social science to discover new insights and publish peer-reviewed articles that advance scientific understanding of racial justice and public safety. The VP will report to the Senior Vice President of Science (SVP).
Key Responsibilities
Academic Research Production
- Lead an interdisciplinary team of quantitative and mixed-methods social scientists in publishing high-quality journal manuscripts focused on racial equity, reducing harm in public safety systems, and redesigning public safety;
- Refine CPE’s policies and protocols for academic research manuscript development, authorship and acknowledgements, quality assurance, and dissemination;
- Expand team capacity, identify staffing needs, and recommend new roles as needed;
- Recruit, onboard, and supervise senior research scientists;
- Manage existing strategic academic research collaborations and recommend development of new partnerships as needed;
- Co-author research publications and present findings to external scientific audiences at professional conferences, CPE-led convenings, and other events.
CPE-Yale Research Lab
- Provide intellectual leadership for the CPE-Yale Research Lab at Yale University in collaboration with the PI/CEO and SVP;
- Represent the CPE-Yale Lab at public events (remotely and in-person), and provide on-site leadership for key in-person events in New Haven, CT, as needed;
- Supervise the CPE-Yale Research Manager and oversee IRB applications and scientific research proposals submitted through Yale University.
CPE Science Networking and Infrastructure
- Collaborate with the SVP and other senior leaders to ensure cohesion across CPE’s entire research portfolio and alignment of the scientific work with CPE’s Strategic Plan;
- Translate CPE strategy into actionable goals for Academic Science team members;
- Collaborate with the SVP and PI/CEO to network proactively with the broader scientific community working at the intersection of public safety and racial equity, and manage positioning of CPE’s science and scientists across disciplinary ecosystems (e.g., conferences, invited talks, and professional associations);
- Support the SVP in convening and maintaining relationships with the CPE Science Advisory Council and in reporting key findings and progress to CPE’s Board;
- Support collaborative efforts related to CPE’s science and data infrastructure; and contribute to CPE-wide knowledge management efforts.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess most, if not all, of the following qualifications or characteristics:
- PhD in a social science, applied data science, or related field required;
- Record of results in producing high-quality quantitative social science research manuscripts published in peer-reviewed academic outlets;
- Strong knowledge of at least one academic social science discipline, including professional norms for publication and career development;
- Broad quantitative and/or mixed-methods research experience; policy or program impact evaluation experience, and familiarity with R, Python, JupyterHub, Git/GitHub, S3 and other tools are a plus;
- Minimum 5 years experience in managing research teams, preferably in an academic setting;
- Deep appreciation for interdisciplinary social science research and ability to mentor junior researchers across disciplines;
- Proficient in performance management, able to provide regular, constructive, actionable feedback to junior team members; ability to and interest in monitoring and tracking employee performance via weekly check-ins, quarterly check-ins, and biannual reviews to support the professional development of team members;
- Proficient in mindful delegation and capacity to assign work while clearly articulating deliverable expectations;
- Provide professional development guidance and mentorship to unlock talents and potential of direct reports;
- Demonstrate an appreciation for the management function and participate in management development in an ongoing way;
- Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to contribute vision to help shape a growing team;
- Experience leading diverse, interdisciplinary teams and complex projects;
- Ability to develop a strong, inclusive culture among a geographically dispersed team during a time of rapid growth;
- Comfortable leading teams through changing circumstances, priorities, and goals.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $145,000 - $175,000.
