The Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) MD Anderson, is seeking to recruit an outstanding academic benign hematologist to join a vibrant Hematology Section and develop strong clinical programs in classical hematology consultations in clinics and affiliated hospitals. This position will provide an opportunity to be the lead adult hematologist in the South Texas Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center (STHTC), a federally-designated Center providing comprehensive care to pediatric and adult patients with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet and clotting disorders. Other important programs with opportunities to develop research and scholarly portfolios include clinics focused on Unusual Site Thrombosis and Hypercoagulable states, Myelodysplastic syndrome precursor states, Systems-based hematology to enhance quality of care for classical hematology across the UT Health Practice and Primary-Care Program, Classical hematology disorders in solid organ transplant recipients and in pregnancy, and Rare Disorder clinics. As faculty, this individual will have the ability to develop various research and scholarly portfolios and meaningfully contribute to medical student, resident, and fellowship training.
The Division of Hematology/Oncology is a part of the Department of Medicine and the Mays Cancer Center. The Division encompasses three major Sections: Solid Tumors Oncology, Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation, and Basic/Translational Sciences. The Mays Cancer Center at UTHSA is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Texas, covering a 38-county service area. The Mays Cancer Center is led by Executive Director, Ruben Mesa, MD, who joined the organization in 2017 from Mayo Clinic with an esteemed research and publication record. Additionally, the Mays Cancer Center recently entered into partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center, and UTHSA has just broken ground on a new $430M specialty hospital that will open in 2024 to offer specialty care in cancer, orthopedics, urology, and thoracic and bariatric surgery. The eight-story, 144-bed facility will be connected by a sky Bridge to the Mays Cancer Center.
UT Health San Antonio's ACGME accredited Hematology/Oncology Fellowship program educates fellows in the field of academic medicine, including both clinical and basic science related to cancer and blood disease. Fellows have ample opportunities for training at the CTRC, and affiliated hospitals, including the Audie L. Murphy Veteran Affairs Hospital.
Qualifications:
- M.D. and board certified/eligible in Hematology.
- Eligible for licensure by the Texas Medical Board.
- Academic accomplishments and credentials sufficient to qualify at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher at UT Health San Antonio.
