10,000 Degrees has helped thousands of students get to and successfully graduate college. Over 80% of 10,000 Degrees’ students go on to be four-year college graduates, far exceeding national averages, and its students starting at community college transfer and graduate with their baccalaureate at three times the national average. 10,000 Degrees currently operates in seven Bay Area Counties, reaching more than 12,000 students and families annually, and is supporting 2,200 students in colleges across the country. Last year, 10,000 Degrees distributed $4 million in their own scholarships and leveraged an additional $22.5 million in free financial aid.

10,000 Degrees recently launched its latest strategic plan (2022-2026), with plans to significantly grow its impact, doubling the number of students and families served while maintaining their high standard of student outcomes and college graduation rates. The Opportunity

This is a tremendous opportunity for a Chief Financial and Operations Officer to be part of a dynamic team and organization committed to achieving educational equity. This position will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer, serve on the Senior Leadership Team and will help to inform, lead and guide the organization through its next growth phase. 10,000 Degrees is at a key inflection point in its history. With a recently approved strategic plan and critical seed funding already committed, this position will be key to the execution of a plan that will significantly grow the impact of 10,000 Degrees.

The Chief Financial and Operations Officer (CFOO) will bring deep experience in nonprofit finance and operations, organizational growth, and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of program, operations, budgeting and planning and fund development.

This is a leadership role that sets the course for our success, mapping out the financial strategies and operational systems that directly impact our students and community. The CFOO has a head for numbers, command of big projects, a love of continuous improvement efforts, a vision for the future, and a heart for philanthropy.  The CFOO will join a thriving and rapidly growing organization that is doing bigger and bolder work in these challenging times.  As a member of the leadership team, they will bring a genuine passion for 10,000 Degrees’ mission and a holistic view of 10,000 Degrees’ impact in the community. They will have significant experience driving organizational success with an approach steeped in cultural awareness and competence. The CFOO is a coach and player who values the contributions of staff and ensures that staff have an environment where their work, ideas, and their lived experience are honored and appreciated.

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree preferred. Additional preferences include candidates with shared lived experiences to the students served by 10,000 Degrees. This is a full time, exempt role based in San Rafael, CA.

The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

Executive Leadership

  • Strategy: Serve as a critical member of the executive leadership team and help develop the organizational strategic plan and organizational policy, ensuring that all organizational initiatives make economic sense and are consistent with our financial strategy and effective operations.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors Finance, Audit, and Investment committees with the ability to clearly communicate and present critical matters including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting materials and metrics.
  • Analysis: Offer financial and economic insights and analysis for decision‐making, strategic direction, long‐range planning, and business modeling.
  • Leadership: Lead finance, human resources and operations team of eight, supporting them in executing effectively while continually building knowledge about industry best practices in budgeting and financial analysis, accounting, tax, HR, technology, legal and policy related to nonprofits and philanthropy.

Finance and Accounting 

  • Development, Oversight & Implementation: Oversee the tools and systems for all finance and accounting including organizational budgeting and financial analysis, internal accounting, compliance, contracts management, year‐end financial audit, and tax filings.
  • Budget & Mission Alignment: Oversee and manage costs and profitability, making sure expenditures are consistent with the organization’s budget, goals, and mission including fund spending calculations and cash flow to meet operational needs.

Administration and Operations

  • Administration & Technology: Establish organization‐wide financial, administrative, technology, and operational objectives, policies, programs, systems, and practices with a goal of continuously facilitating inter‐teams’ collaboration, improvement, and efficiency.
  • Human Resources: Oversee all aspects of HR and third‐party vendors and contractors including recruiting, hiring, compensation, training, evaluation, and policy.
  • Organizational Culture: Model and instill a service orientation that inspires a professional staff to provide the best service possible internally and externally.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Expert Advice: Ensure strategic legal advice, anticipate issues and estimate risks, and identify proactive solutions that will eliminate or mitigate risks.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal legal and reporting requirements; and tax, charitable giving, and governance regulations.

Comfortable with both high‐level leadership and hands‐on problem solving in a rapidly growing organization. An excellent leader of a highly skilled team. In addition, strong candidates will offer:

  • 10+ years of increasing responsibility in senior level management experience
  • 5+ years managing wide ranging finance and administrative responsibilities for a $10 million to $20 million organization or business unit
  • Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in management of financial reporting and ensuring streamlined, effective administration and operations
  • A demonstrated ability to build relationships by employing strong organizational management, communication, implementation, problemsolving and mentoring skills, fostering collaboration
  • Strong technology skills
  • Solid understanding of pertinent tax regulations and state and federal laws
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
